Worth all the Hype?
Splendor - The current hotness and the buzz machine is in overdrive. Is it worth the hype tho?Hmm...I feel much of the hype with splendor is down the the components, which are fantastic. The chips are solid, weighty and just nice to collect and hold - they make a wonderful click clack when you pick them up and put them down. The game itself is about set collection with a stripped down 'build an engine' mechanic, the theme tying it together is so thin you have to be careful not to poke your finger through it...It's simple to learn, each players turn is blindingly fast, the game is done and dusted in as little as 20 minutes. This is no strategic masterpiece, If your after a rival to Terra Mystica or Bora Bora - This isn't it.In fact, without those amazing components I doubt the game would have registered on most peoples radar at all. That said, with everything combined this game is quite appealing, and somewhat addictive. It has a physicality that just makes it fun to play and you stop worrying about the depth of the game and the thin theme and just start enjoying it for what it is - An easy to learn, quick to play opener / lunchtime game. So, worth the hype? Maybe / maybe not, but its certainly a decent and fun game that's worth a play or two (If you can find it anywhere!).

A great board game
We love this game! The game takes about 30 minutes to play, which is perfect for maintaining interest. It is a game of luck and strategy. Our grandchildren (aged 9 to 11) can play - and win - so it can be enjoyed by the whole family. It is easy to play but once you have played it a few times, you begin to develop diabolical strategies to beat your opponents. Beware, as it can become addictive and it can leave you seething with resentment when your opponent snatches victory just as you thought you had it in the bag!

Addictive game form couples & groups - & I like the new design
This is a simple game with plenty of depth & different routes to victory. You can load up on the cheap level 1 cards to stock up to gain points later in the game or try to earn higher level point-scoring cards early on but with fewer cards. Scales well for couples & 3 & 4 players. Also, I prefer the new design of the cards to the original. So, excellent purchase for me.

Wanted a good family game and Excelsior I found it.
What an excellent game,Firstly we are a family of 3 marvel fans two 30 somethings and a 4yr old.We have bought a few marvel board games and found them hard to understand at first but this game is different.I watched one video of a couple playing it online and after 20mins of that knew exactly how to play and what my strategy would be.We both really enjoyed how easy it is to play and the ease of the set up (it's hard to play the same strategy every game with a 4yr old girl demanding you get a spiderman every time!)The game took around 20mins and is fast paced enough to not get stale. The cards feel good and high quality and the infinity stones (poker chips) are sold, weighted and also have a high quality. If you are looking for a family game I would stop at this one and just get it.EXCELSIOR!UPDATE, the 4yr old is now 7 and can fully play on her own and knows the rules and can win with no help from an adult. I know it says 10plus but they can pick it up younger.

Just one more go!
Recently picked up a copy after my Brother introduced me to it, great with 2 players even better with 3 - 4The game starts with three stacks of 'mining' cards on the table, and a separate stack of higher value noble cards with only 4 cards from each stack visible at any one time. Each round of the game the player can either buy a card or collect a number of gem chips (from a limited communal pool) which in subsequent turns can be used to purchase a card from the in-play 'mining stack'. these cards have a gem purchase value and a separate gem value of there own.Once a card is acquired it becomes part of your hand and its own gem value can be used in conjunction with the 'gem chips' to acquire better and better cards. Eventually the cards remove the need to pick up so many of the gem chips and it becomes easier to acquire the cards in the 'mining stacks'.The trick is to try and collect these mining cards and eventually acquire the more powerful 'numbered cards' that appear occasionally in the mining stack (a total of 15 points is needed for victory) . These numbered cards often have a high gem value so don't come into play till later in the game. Its about trying to balance between holding off buying cards by using your turn to either build up coins (to a limited total), or buying lower value cards to stockpile and eventually earn the expensive noble 'cards' (which can only be purchased with cards) and of course trying to block other players from taking a card. Players hands are visible so you can build a picture of what people are trying to achieve and react accordingly. Its much simpler than it sounds, and quite often the game will start slow but suddenly all players will come close to the victory goal within one or two rounds of each other as each player will suddenly be able to afford to purchase the noble cards and the high gem 'numbered cards'.Very easy to pick up but once you get into it you realise just how much depth splendor has, enjoy at your peril as that victory you had in your sights is snatched away at the last second.
