Close enough to a portable box fan
For context, I came to this product not so much because I have crazy noise in my sleeping environment, but more because I'm a painfully light/fussy sleeper who's been more or less addicted to white noise (preferably box fans) as a coping tool since adolescence. At home, I've slept with a box fan on medium to high for most of my adult life -- sometimes two fans, even, when extra outside noise is expected to be a problem. For years, withdrawal from this creature comfort was just one more irritation to worry about while traveling. I used other cheap sound machines or white noise phone apps, but they were qualitatively much worse than a box fan, and my sleep suffered -- especially in environments with outside noise. The LectroFan Classic is much, much closer to a permanently acceptable box fan replacement... and it fits in your suitcase or backpack... hell, even the pocket of my backpack! If a good white noise app on an iPhone speaker is 50% as helpful as a box fan, I'd say this gets you more like 80-90% of the way there.Pros:- Incredible volume for the size. If you max it out in a motel room, it might legitimately disturb the neighbors. I use it around half volume even at home where that's not a concern. The speaker size also allows for more pleasant low frequencies than phone speakers, even if it can't totally match a real 2 ft x 2 ft box fan.- Decent selection of sounds (20 total; 10 "fan" and 10 "white noise")- Solidly made and very convenient, compact form factor (roughly 4.5" x 4.5" x 2"). There are no flimsy appendages, moving parts, or anything that seems prone to breaking absent real abuse.- External side of power cord is USB-A, so you can run this from power banks and other charging devices. I've even done this while sleeping in the car and during a night long power outage. The package includes a USB power brick, though, so you don't need to bring your own if you don't want to.Cons:- Internal side (plugging into the device) of power cord is proprietary. If only the LectroFan were fully USB powered including the input jack, there'd never be any concern about breaking or losing the original power cord and having trouble replacing it while traveling.- Most of the 10 "fan" sounds are disappointing, as someone whose ideal white noise is a real box fan. Most have too much drone and not enough "whoosh." On some, the drone is distractingly variable/oscillating. I stick strictly to the "white noise" section. For what it's worth, as a box fan sleeping aficionado, I really only find options #3, 4, 5, or 6 on the "white noise" menu highly useful... and I've settled on #5 ("Amber" in the manual).

Both sides of the bed
My wife first introduced me to a sleep noise machine when we got married 16 years ago. Prior to that, I slept with a fan running all night which is really like a sleep noise machine that blows a lot of air. Anyway, this is the Cadillac of noise machines as far as I'm concerned because it has a large selection of sounds and it doesn't have a loop. On cheaper noise machines a loop is where they recorded the noise for a short period of time and then they repeat it over and over all night. Once you reach the end of where it was recorded and start over there is a distinguishable blip in the sound when it starts over. If you purchase a cheap noise machine you will lay in bed all night waiting for the blip to come around and will eventually go insane. THIS SLEEP NOISE MACHINE DOESN'T HAVE THAT BLIP. You will never hear anything but a constant sound and that is so important. My wife and I both have these on our night stands and we also have a backup to travel with (we left one in a hotel by mistake one time and when we got home we had to wait for a new one to get delivered so we just don't travel with the ones we keep by the bed. IT'S THAT IMPORTANT. We sleep so soundly sometimes that I tell people if an airplane crashed into the other side of the house during the night I wouldn't know it until I got up the next morning. There will probably be a break-in and get use to it period of time if you've never used one. But I believe over time you will be happy you got this.

Excellent white noise machine
I bought this item 2 years ago. The machine still works great. I love the options to customize the sound. I recently had a small problem with the cord. I emailed Adaptive Sound Technologies to purchase a replacement cord. Customer service was quick and amazing. Solved my problem immediately & happily. Very rare to see this type of customer service these days. I highly recommend the product and the company.
