4 stars as an eReader - 2 stars as a tablet, which is why I paid a premium for this android device.
I was on the fence about a 3 or 4 star rating for the device. I really like the hardware, but the firmware leaves something to be desired. I don't think this is so much the fault of Onyx but due to limitations of Android 6.0.My hope was (and still is) to find a e-ink tablet that I can install Moon+ Reader, can read aloud using TTS and can sync via Dropbox or Google Drive. This was the closest I've seen. But the TTS is terrible on this device. Also, due to apparent limitations of the built in browser (or Android 6.0), authenticating Moon+ Reader with Dropbox is not possible. Google Drive is not compatible with the version of Google Play on Android 6.0.But not everyone has such specific needs, so here's what I feel is a fairly honest review of the eReader.Pros:* Hardware - The hardware is very nice. While it is plastic, it doesn't feel cheap at all. It feels like a very solid device. I can't say enough for the hardware :)* Design - I like the form factor. The 8" screen is very nice, and the device feels fairly light and well balanced.* Performance - It's pretty responsive. The built-in reader app is very responsive and feels on par with reading with a Kindle. I had used a Kobo Aura before and page turns on this device are much more responsive than on that device.* Screen - The e-ink screen is decent.* Backlighting - The backlighting is fantastic. Very high granularity allows you to control the light from off to full brightness in 32 steps for both blue-ish (for daylight reading) and "orange-ish" light (for night reading).Cons:* Battery - Not exactly a Con, but you have to expect that the battery life of an android device like this won't be as long as a dedicated eReader. Still better than a LCD tablet in terms of power consumption.* TTS - The real deal breaker *for me* is the Text-To-Speech feature. It comes with the Pico engine and there's no way to change that. I know not everyone will care about this, but it's a feature I really do care about.* Dictionary - Downloading a dictionary is a challenge because it uses a built in browser that navigates to a Chinese language website for download. See the Notes section below on how to get around that. Once the dictionary is installed though it performs well.* Firmware - Updates are a bit of a pain. I couldn't install updates initially and and kept getting a dialog "package verify failed". You need to switch back to Chinese language to perform firmware upgrades, and then switch back. It still reports there is a newer version of the firmware available when I have English selected, but it's not available when Chinese is selected.* Book Ecosystem - There are no English language books that I saw in the store, or any way to filter by language, so you have to be able to bring your own books in.Notes:* Install Google Translate and use the Camera Live Translate feature to read some of the Chinese language screens when you need to download a dictionary or when you need to update the firmware.* A fairly recent addition to the Kindle firmware is the ability to ignore screen touches except for page turns. It would be nice if reader apps added this feature.
