The Homeowner's Guide to Mold Paperback – Illustrated, July 5, 2006

Our family purchased a home with a covered up mold problem that went unnoticed during the inspection, appraisal, realtor and purchasing process. We have purchased several other books before this one. This one is the best for the money without hiring a Certified Industrial Hygienist.If we would have known what is written on these pages for the mere $21.95, we could have saved ourselves much time, money, our health and nerves. The book is categorized very nicely. The author and publisher really made this very informative, educational and it seems to be a labor of love.

Did learn a lot from this book, what to look for and what to do to resolve it.

The main claims in the book are: (1) you should hire a mold professional for anything that is more than 10 sqft; (2) the best way to prevent mold is to keep water and moisture out of your home, and it includes tips on doing so; (3) overviews of some mold resistant material and hiring mold remediators.But there's one big thing missing. Given how dangerous mold is (which the book talks a lot about), I would have expected very detailed instructions on how to clean up an area that is less than 10 sqft. The book talks a little about this for shower curtains, tubs, and siding but that's about it. There's no instructions on how to remove small mold areas on ceilings, walls, etc, even if they are less than 10 sqft. The DIY mold removal subsection basically says "don't", even though the intro says small areas of less than 10 sqft are fine to DIY.In short, it's a good mold prevention book and a good book if you want to read up on hiring a professional before doing so. But it's not good for anything DIY.

I heard this author on a program on the radio. Is very knowledgable about toxic black mold as he has his own business and cleans infested houses himself. Everything in this book that you would want to know about toxic black mold and how to tell the difference between toxic black mold and other types of mold. Great book!!

I bought this book to help out my sister with a mold problem. This book sounded just like one "expert" who quoted $7000 that did not even include all recommended repairs. Another inspector was brought in and took samples which were sent to an accredited biological test lab and based on the particular species involved was comfortable only reccomending less $1200 in redmisiation and repairs. The only thing not included was a new coat of paint which we were going to do anyway.The use of scare tactics is rife in this business.
