Works great on marijuana smoke! (plus lots of other stuff)
I'll get to why I knocked a star off my review in a minute (check out my update at the bottom, back to 5 stars). Just know, this thing is amazing! I wouldn't call it a great value, but it's worth every single penny. We have 4 dogs in a single story open design of about 1250 square feet. I instantly noticed a huge improvement in air quality within a short time after turning it on! The auto function works amazingly well. It will be sitting there on it's lowest fan speed, having successfully cleaned the air all day/night. The little blue circle indicator light tells you your air is currently at it's cleanest. I'll light up a joint about 20' from the purifier and within a minute or so I'll notice the fan speed crank up to its fullest! (It's still super quiet though, even on its highest you can't hear it with a TV on) Red indicator light! Then purple! It tells me right away that my air has been polluted and it's working to fix it. Within 20 or 30 minutes, the whole house is completely smoke and scent free! It's perfect for all you well-to-do stoners such as myself. You make good money, you have nice things, you're a grown up now! You don't want other adults coming over to your marijuana smoke filled house. Especially all your friends with kids. Or maybe you have kids? What kind of an example are you setting!? Opening the windows on a nice day only does so much. And if you have cold winters and can't open the windows, what then? You buy this thing ya dummy. All those problems will be solved. I knocked off a star because my wife is making me return it. She doesn't like how it looks. I don't think it's terrible. It's the great air purifier paradox: In order for it to work well it's needs to be out in the open, but to be out in the open it needs to not look stupid. There's a lot of air purifiers that I passed over based on looks alone. This one I was on the fence about, the color choice of the panel helped push me over. I'm going to add a picture to this review. If you agree with me and think it's looks not that terrible, leave me a comment! Or if you're wrong and agree with my wife's decision to return it, please don't let me know. Anyway, you can turn off the panel lights by pressing the big colorful button in the middle while it's running. That's obviously nice if you're gonna use this in a bedroom. It'd be nice if you could turn the panel lights on and off without having to turn the entire unit off. Seems like an unnecessary power cycle just to adjust the lights. But hey, it's got a lifetime warranty so who cares if it breaks from excessive power cycles! Long story longer - I'm going to have a hard time replacing this with something else, especially with how well it works. The bar is set REALLY high for cleaning the air in my house now after owning this thing for only a few days. I'm addicted to the fresh air. I work from home and spend a lot of time here. It feels really nice. I will caveat this entire review and say this is the first air purifier I've ever owned. Maybe they all do pretty well? Most of the major players have good reviews. I think it comes down to aesthetics when you spend this much. We don't have a ton of space in our house, so this thing has to sit right out in the open for everyone to wonder and ask what it is. It has to look good. I'll admit that it's not the sexiest. Unfortunately, function over form is losing this battle to form over function this time. P.S. - what maniac thought purple was the right color to indicate your air quality is at its worse!? Why would red indicate the second worst air quality?? Is there some standardized air pollution color rating system that I'm just not aware of? ****Update 2 weeks in, back to a 5 star review**** OK, we tried to replace this unit with a different, more aesthetically pleasing purifier. We tried the Coway AirMega 400. It looks great, covers a similar square footage, and has even better features than this Alen 75i unit....but it flat out just didn't work as well. It was also MUCH louder. With this Alen 75i unit in the same exact position as the Coway AirMega, the air was noticeably cleaner and smell free. Also, on it's loudest setting the 75i is hardly noticeable with a TV on. The Coway AirMega was at least 4 or 5x louder on it's loudest setting...to the point where you didn't want to run it on it's highest setting unless you weren't home. We tried this unit in a few different positions around the house, some out of the way where it didn't work as well, and now in it's new spot (different from the pictures I posted) and it's seriously great! My wife isn't thrilled with the spot we landed on, but it works really well and isn't as bad as she once thought. Seems that function over form has come through to win in the end!

A very good solution for serious air cleaning
I've had this a month, and I bought another as well...and a 45i. I looked at the ratings in Consumer Reports: the 75i had the highest rating of all they tested, so I got it. It is large, and the incoming air vents are large: which means that there is not much noise made by incoming air...and you do not have to run it on the highest levels. I have found the noise to be quite reasonable, and not an annoying sound. One has been in my den which has a lot of books: the dust accumulation has been greatly reduced. The filters have helped with our allergies. I like its simplicity. Fortunately there is no remote control: they just get lost and save no effort in any event. Wifi? Why? There is a light for ordering the filter and then replacing it. You can turn the lights completely off on the panel if you want (e.g., at night). The warranty is apparently indefinite, but it does require a subscription for filters. However, you only need one subscription--no matter how many units you have--and you can choose how often they arrive (from every 6 months on up). The 45i is smaller, and so better for small rooms. About price: I bought all 3 from Amazon (rather than from the Alen website) because the prices were significantly lower. However, SOME Amazon prices were higher (for different covers): you just have to be careful. Also, there are variations on filters: once you get to charcoal filters, the replacements are more expensive (and according to Consumer Reports, the charcoal does not last as long as the HEPA filter). This is the 3rd brand I've had over the years: and I like it the best. The only downside is that it's made in China (although it is an American company).

An Excellent Product
An excellent product! This is my second Alen BreathSmart Air Purifier. Because the first—used for an upstairs master bedroom—work sufficiently, I decided to get a larger one for the entire downstairs area. The larger one has been working extraordinarily well. I have glass coffee tables, end tables, and tv stand that would be covered in dust two-to-three days after thorough dusting. Since I have been using the purifier, dusting has only been necessary every couple of weeks, and even then it's primarily to remove smudge marks, not dust. Even the wooden floors stay, essentially dust-free, for weeks at a time. The motor is inaudible when the air is clean, which is now, most of the time. The BreathSmart Purifier was quite active during the unrelenting smoke from the series of massive, historic, fires here in northern California. The sound of the motor was certainly noticeable, then, but not at all intrusive to typical household activities (e.g., talking on phone, watching tv, reading, sleeping, etc.). The automatic settings have been working perfectly well. It activates its higher settings in response to food smells from cooking, but returns quickly to its inaudible mode in fewer than 20 minutes, or so, after cooking has ceased. The next stage of product development should be the creation of a much smaller version of the product while maintaining the same quality and performance. Still, the appearance of the purifier is as aesthetic as it is effective. The blue light, indicating the air is clean, is both reassuring and comforting. An excellent product, to be sure!

Help to purify the air in our house. Needs to have an operation and code to understand the system. It is printed on the box but once that is recycled the information is gone.

Couldn't believe how quiet this Alen 75i is. Set up was easy, back handle, balances unit nicely when moving, also has 2 wheels to make it easier if needed.. My wife was pleasantly surprised and loves the auto mode that increases the fan speed if the laser sensor identifies any additional air particles due to cooking. Even though this unit was higher priced, Consumers Report rated this number 1, and I can see why. Filter is expensive but lasts between 12 to 18 months which makes it one of the cheapest to run over time. Most other air purifiers recommend filter changes every 6 months. Look at operating costs when you compare units. Also one of the few energy efficient units available for larger areas. Highly recommend.

This is expensive & I don’t mind spending the money…well designed & very functional - either automatically adjust fan speed or manual. I love the light which indicates air quality (this can be hidden too)…all in all a good investment. I sometimes get whiffs of clean air like the mountains. If you choose to buy one be careful to select the filter to most suite your needs - easy to miss

This air cleaner made a noticeable difference within the first hour of use. It is very quiet and even on high speed just sounds like a fan running. Very happy with our purchase and it is worth the money.

This is an excellent air purifier and very quiet. Purchasers should be aware that Alen states that the lifetime warranty does not apply outside the USA so Canadian purchasers are out of luck
