Sweet Movie Builds Up Character, Doing Right, and Dedication
Very sweet movie! The main character is respectful, driven, and charming. Overall, she and her mother, and the girl whom she eventually becomes friends with, are all driven by a sense of right and of being fair. Some of the other mothers, girls, and coaches exhibit cheating and some mild bullying, but there is redemption for the major case of this through the girls' drive to do the right thing. Main character Casey does forsake Harvard and her mother's dream for ice skating (her own dream), but in her reasons for doing so, she doesn't trivialize school and education, and she does emphasize art and finding what she in particular is passionate about. There is a teeny bit of sweet teen romance, involving a few kisses, but all the characters concerned are high school seniors, and Casey and her boy show care and kindness more than affection toward each other, so I would say it's alright for even younger girls. The mom-and-daughter drama is dramatically tense but never creates a climate of total disrespect from the children. All in all, I think this nicely captures what it can be like to be a late-teen, trying to discover what you really want to do in life, and I think that it nicely shows how you can follow a talent or a passion at any age, and be the better for having done it.

THIS MOVIE TAKES THE GOLD.
I watched this movie growing up. I recall heading to the Video Store to rent it almost every week. Tonight, I hunkered down with some kindred spirits and re-watched this classic flick. Let me tell you, IT TAKES THE GOLD!!!!!!!!Female characters depicted are real and excellent role models---highly recommend for children and adults alike!!Side note: it passes the bechdel test with FLYING COLORS!!!!!!!!My only criticism is that it does not show the possibility of Casey going to school as well as skating. It does not have to be one of the other, am I right my pals!!!Was pleased with the love interest and how seamlessly he flowed with the story. It was not forced or out of place. Casey and Teddy were a side plot that only added depth to the story... they never deterred from the main points of the story. AHHH they could not have done it better.Don't even get me started on the parallel mother daughter relationships... Just please watch.

Ice skate competition
It was a good movie on ice skates. The challenges, heartaches, health , and the tragic moment of her vision didn't stop her to skate

An intelligent film about letting yourself be WHO YOU REALLY ARE.
I bought this used for my daughter, remembering how it was from years ago. After time has passed, I still appreciated the message in this film: that being WHO YOU ARE, despite parental expectations and categorization by athletic and academic ability, peer grouping, and stereotyped career/life paths is most important. Making yourself happy with who you are while still striving to make the best of yourself is a great message for coming-of-age and grade-school tweens who will realize that being smart and athletic are not mutually exclusive. Defying the narrow columns that young adult life sorts kids into is a great idea. I appreciated the main actress and her down-to-earth, positive, and mature perspective on her goals and challenges. She went for it, even if she didn't expect amazing success. The fantasy part of exceeding all expectations is a bit off, but this again is a movie for children, not an academy award category film. My eight year old will love it.

Wonderful skating/ coming of age film: Great classic
This is a classic. It has a place in several genres and excels in all of them. There are many messages, many rich narrative angles and many well drawn characters. The dialogue, acting, production values, skating, photography and pacing are all done very well. The cast is all star, and all on form. The plot premise is original and strong and easy to identify and engage with. I am a fan of the 'Cutting Edge' series of skating films, and I have to say this is a better and more serious film than those. It does not put a foot wrong and has many lovely little quips and moments.I won;t spoil the joy of discovery for anyone who has not yet seen the film with spoilers.HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

A nice, unpretentious film, with humour, charm and lovely ice scenes
This is a nice, unpretentious little film. The story centres on bright school girl Casey, who focuses on her books, skates on the pond outside her house, and wishes in a mild sort of way that she could be one of the popular girls. The popular girls are represented chiefly by the pretty daughter of a former champion ice skater, who is being trained by her mother to be an ice skating star. When Casey's physics teacher tells her that she must do a project with a personal edge to it, Casey decides that her enjoyment of ice skating on the frozen pond outside her house would be a good topic. The premise that transforms Casey from pond-skater to competitive ice skater is entirely daft, but perfectly amiable. She turns up at the rink to film the would-be champions as part of her physics project, analyzing jump trajectories and spins etc, but decides that for her project to be truly "personal" she must be more hands-on (or skates-on), so she enrolls in a beginners class. You can guess the rest, really. What makes it particularly nice, and removes it from dreadful predictability, is that instead of putting down the upstart, all the other skaters from her school actually make her welcome, encouraging the new talent in their midst. A foil to all this goodness is Casey's coach, played with confidence and charm by Kim Cattrall. An ambivalent character, she is in two minds whether to help Casey or sabotage her. There's also some very mild love interest, which is also charming, between Casey and the driver of the ice-cleaning machine. For those who bought the film because of a love of ice-skating, there's plenty of opportunity to enjoy some well-choreographed figure skating sequences during the bits of the film when the girls are shown in competition. I spent most of my childhood on the ice and was always glued to ice skating championships on TV, and I thought that these were very well done.A slightly dubious moral in the story is when Casey decides, in the middle of an apparently successful interview for Harvard University, to give up the possibility of a brilliant education to try to make it as a competitive ice skater. Her mother, at first horrified, eventually supports her. I don't have kids but that made my blood run fairly cold! I was already making arguments in my head for advising her re gap-years etc. But this is, of course, a fairy tale, not an argument for a life strategy!Overall this is a generously feel-good movie with some really well put together ice skating sequences. It is full of gentle and often self-deprecating humour. In its own quiet way, there's never a dull moment. I was completely charmed by this well crafted film.

Ice Princess - DVD
My granddaughter aged 10 loved this DVD. She has recently been having ice skating lessons and this product was bought to encourage her with her lessons and show what could be achieved. This DVD was recommended by my twin granddaughters aged 13 who had really enjoyed this film and loved the ice skating sequences.
