A robust and portable water filter that delivers 10, 000 liters / 2, 650 US gallons of clean water for group use. The LIFESAVER jerrycan holds up to 18. 5 liters at any one time and is designed to support those with a greater demand for clean water such as groups expeditions, people embarking on overland travelling or those setting themselves up for off-grid living. The LIFESAVER jerrycan was designed to store and carry dirty water, once water is cleaned there is risk of recontamination. With the jerrycan, just filter water when you want to drink it. Filter watered can be used for drinking, washing and cooking. No need for bad tasting chemicals such as chlorine or chlorine dioxide. LIFESAVER microbiological water filters use ultra filtration technology to filter out viruses, bacteria, cysts and parasites from contaminated water sources. LIFESAVER water filters meet an adaption of National Sanitation Foundation Protocol 231 based on recommendations of the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). LIFESAVER bottles filter bacteria to a minimum of Log 6 (99. 9999%), viruses to a minimum of Log 4 (99. 99%) and cysts to a minimum of Log 3 (99. 9%).

Carbon (Filter) Tap Not Included as Standard
I have not had time yet to review the operation of this item, however I wanted to alert other customers to an omission. As delivered, the Lifesaver JerryCan 10,000 included only a standard outlet tap and not the carbon tap (activated carbon filter) advertised as "replacement" items. The instructions mention using the carbon tap for chemically contaminated water and using the standard tap provided with the unit otherwise, however you don't get to read that until after you have purchased the item and it has been delivered. The carbon tap is supposed to reduce water flow significantly. For the price of this item, I expected it to include a carbon tap as well as the filter cartridge as standard (with maybe a standard tap included as a bonus).Be aware that if you want the carbon filter tap, you will likely have to purchase separately at extra cost.

Jerrycan: a great travel or survival tool
Very good product. Took with me on trip to west Africa. Used with several different sources of water. Result was a high quality drinking water every time. Very simple to use. Just fill up the can and pump until the pressure is strong enough. Then disperse the filtered water to an appropriate bottle, container, or drinking cup.

Quality components. You get what you pay for.
The Lifesaver filter appears to be the only mechanical filter on the market that is also capable of filtering viruses due to the very small 0.015 micron filter size as compared to other well known and reliable systems such as the Katadyn Pocket water filter which has a 0.2 micron Silver Ceramic filter cartridge. The Katadyn Pocket filter fact sheet also mentions that the mechanical 0.2 micron filter can also filter radioactive particles which are larger than 0.2 microns. The Lifesaver will probably have even better performance filtering radioactive particles greater than 0.015 microns. A radioactive particle at 0.015 microns diameter will have 2700 times less radioactive potential than a 0.2 micron particle. The Lifesaver system is probably the best CBRN water filter commercially available. Even the bacterial reduction performance shows a very impressive Log 7.5 reduction. In reality that is getting to the point when no individual bacteria can be measured passing through the filter. Other conventional filters including UV systems such as the Steripen are being measured in Log 3-4 reduction i.e. Hundreds to thousands of times less effective.Filter lifetime seems to be impressive as well available in 10,000 and 20,000 liter capacity. For a family of 4 that would mean over 660 gallons or 1320 days continuous use. (assuming 1 gallon of drinking water per person per day). When comparing the cost of the Lifesaver Jerry Can against other filtration systems such as the Katadyn Expedition or Endurance grade filters with the additional expense of a UV system that would be needed for the deactivation of viruses and even the water carrier itself i.e. the actual Jerry Can that would be required to transport it, then the Lifesaver Jerry Can is probably very cost effective considering the claimed performance. The Lifesaver Jerry Can will perform all three steps in one simple device. It also works excellent for car a or vehicle camping water filter and storage solution as well as a device which can be tucked away unused in the garage or basement ready for a domestic water emergency (domestic water supply availability is subject to electrical power outages in many areas).Enough theory, how does it work? Well, it works flawlessly! I have used this system a dozen or so times while SUV camping, hunting and even once during a water boil advisory when the power was out and there was no way for me to boil the water (thanks to hurricane Sandy) Another use I managed to find for this is a pressurized camp shower! Lifesaver makes a shower attachment and the dark blue color of the 20,000 liter unit is dark enough to heat the water significantly when left in the sun. You could imagine the relief of a semi hot, pressurized camp shower.Summary:The unit is effective against 99.9% of all bacteria, virus and even claimed to be effective against chemical and radiological hazards. There is an added benefit to a camp shower when desired. That is a major perk for me.In the space of one Jerry Can, which is how I already store water, I now have filtering capability.Simple to use. Fill, pump, drink.DURABLE, DURABLE, DURABLE!The cost is steep, but put it into perspective: 1 Jerry can ~ $50.00 1 Name brand filter ~ $150.00 1 Steripen ~ 100.00 ----------------------------- Total cost of 3 items needed to be as effective as one Lifesaver? $300.00 Total space/weight savings = pricelessOverall this is a SOLID 5 STAR ITEM. I look forward to many years of use from this device and so far it has served quite handy.

It works way better on its side, tap facing down. Do not bother to pump when it is upright. Also opt for the carbon filter!
I use this jerrycan literally ever day. I am using it right now, in fact. I live on a boat and we filter all our cooming and drinking water from the boat tanks through the lifesaver. A whole boat filter for viruses is quite expensive, and you never know what is in the water you fill your tanks with. I have accepted water tank fills throughout the carribean with confidence due to the lifesaver. My only reccomendation is do not pump it up too much or you will crack it. It is mdpe, not hdpe and it can stretch and crack. I welded mine back together with a torch. Why suffer? don't pump it up too much. In my photo the orange strap is to reinforce the repair I had to make.

Big Blue is the Best
I just got back from a 7 day camping/canoe trip in Maine. At first my fellow campers made fun of "big blue". But they soon appreciated getting filtered water in volume without effort. If space is not an issue, this filter will serve you well.

The filter cartridge was produced almost 2 years ago, leaving 1 year of shelf life. This was covert by a newer Jerry can. O-ring was not included. Seller did not respond.
