Prescription for Herbal Healing: An Easy-to-Use A-Z Reference to Hundreds of Common Disorders and Their Herbal Remedies

An excellent resource ~ indispensable, accurate!
I just purchased my own (used) copy of this excellent reference, having read portions of it online, perused a copy owned by a friend and thumbing through it several months ago in the reference section provided in a local health food store.I've done a great deal of work with herbs and nutrition, considering it essential if we are to survive many conditions that are often not helped by or are made worse by Western medicine and hospitalization. In my current environment, I am able to raise or gather relatively few medicinal and culinary herbs. Two reasons: the winds are astonishing, the soil is both alkaline and is a bit saline. As for gathering "in the wild", one must be ever vigilant due to runoff from poorly regulated mining operations which introduce heavy metals and some amount of radioactive particles into the air and water. So I more often rely on my trusted local discount health food store or order online, typically through Mountain Rose Herbs or via Amazon.Due, it is suspected, to one of the above questionable mining "interests" having somehow acquired the mineral rights on two mines that that had been long shut down ~ likely for very good reasons ~ the residents of the town which lies directly below the mountains where the old tailings are being moved and sifted are experiencing sudden and inexplicable problems. Healthy people one day are in hospital the next, with cancers from bladder/bowel to brain. I have personally found one implausible and bizarre plant mutation on the property of a woman who was in reasonably good health (overweight, poor diet) and collapsed, unable to breathe. She is a staunch believer in traditional Western medicine and so was hospitalized not once, but twice for a period in excess of one month. She lost 40 lbs the hard way is the only positive result. She is now taking medications and must remain on oxygen for the rest of her life. Understand I am not speaking of *elderly* people or infants with vulnerable immune systems, here.Every recommendation in this book has been supported and reinforced by independent research I have done on behalf of friends who prefer relying on natural remedies and nutrition. My current focus is on curing or stopping the spread of bladder cancer and utilizing alternative treatments to ease chronic pain from aggressive osteoarthritis in friends, neither of whom wish to receive standard treatments in hospital settings. Personally, since I continue to live in a high-risk environment, my chances of getting cancer are far better than average. Having seen both failures and successes of "Chemo" and radiation treatments, I have made up my mind that when the treatment is often worse than the cure and a person's quality of life (or what's left of it) is often severely compromised, I will rely upon herbs, certain fungi and make whatever adjustments to diet are necessary to sustain my life.My Advance Directive clearly states: no hospitalization, no extraordinary measures, no resuscitation. Understand that I am not entirely *against* Western medicine nor those who practice it. I see a licensed medical practitioner who prescribes pharmaceutical remedies as needed. I then either use compatible remedies to protect my body from damaging side-effects, or wait util the course of medications is complete and then reset my immune system, liver, kidneys, brain with such remedies as are mentioned in this book. Because, even though I'm technically *better*, I am not yet fully recovered. It is not fanatical to become a Vegan or Vegetarian, to insist upon organic products from eco-friendly sources. Nor is it in any way absurd to recognize when we have taken a pain medication containing acetaminophen for a period of weeks, that our liver has probably taken a bit of a beating and needs a bit of TLC.This book provides excellent nutritional advice to follow when one is using herbal healing or is attempting to manage a serious or even life-threatening condition.. although it does not replace the book targeting Nutrition that was written by the same Author (I recommend BOTH). Quite simply put, use of Herbal medicines, fungi, diet and rational amounts and forms of exercise to manage or stop disease is not a NEW idea. When one recognizes how many pharmaceuticals are either using derivatives or are chemically re-engineered to approximate or accentuate a natural occurring plant, tree, berry, fungi.. it truly is mind-boggling. The same Chemo that is prohibitively expensive and too often kills or permanently disables cancer victims can be found HERE in natural form and acquired at far less expense and less risk. And it works. Furthermore, the Author explains the reason it works. Those of you who object to "a bitter or bad taste" are advised that standard Chemo and/or Radiation are far more unpleasant alternatives with no guarantee of a cure.Regarding the single-star reviewer: those are your preferences, promoted for whatever reason(s). It is highly unethical to tout what YOU prefer by denigrating a most excellent reference that is of great benefit to many. I give this book an honest 5-star rating, because it is, has been and will in future be a life-saver.

add on to other medical knowledge and practice
Bought this not so much because I am into herbal healing, but for use in a SHTF scenario when western medicine may be a little harder to come by. I'm not hardcore about this, I just like to have a variety of knowledge and possibilities to draw upon if need be. Never know when I may need to scrounge for something in the yard that I dont have in the medicine cabinet. Maybe it all goes south anyway, but at least I can try something first. So yeh, this manual is just part of my home library. Lots of info, well organized.

Jammed packed with information
First this book arrived within the time frame as suggested by seller. I admitted I did panic when other Items I purchased from Amazon arrived before this particular book. Seller was responsive to my questions regarding the item in transit. As for the Book it self I can only give a brief account as the book actually arrived only 2-3 days ago and I have read only a few pages. First, this book is HUGE, reminds me of my Calc. book from College. Probably, not an item you would carry backpacking or hiking. As I read through some of the information in the book I will say that a bonus would have been to add pictures of the herbs/plants discussed. On the plus side this book offers medical conditions and remedies which are very detailed. There are charts of the human body and endocrine systems that show which plants effect those specific areas of the body. Secondly, the book delves into the aspect of Chinese herbology . This book even details the first recorded history of herbal healing dating back to Egypt. Overall, I say this book is a big addition to my library and I look forward to reading the additional information contained within it.

The Dictionary of Herb Books, that could change your life too!
Love this book! This is my second copy, with my also ordering a copy for my son, who has seen first hand how herbs have healed and changed my life. This book is packed full of information in a user friendly way. First with an Introduction, then the Principles of Herbal Healing, The Herbs, and The Formulas in which to take or use them. Then a list Herbal Prescriptions for Common Health Problems, and that incredible list with the descriptions for many illnesses and/or ailments and the many options/choices in how to treat them. I just can't say enough about this book! What I have learned these past few years from it, have changed my life for the better. I have even got to share a lot of the information with my friends, family and doctor's!Quick Shipped also, arriving to me 4 days after my late night order!

A Must Have Book
This book is a valuable resource for anyone who is desiring to find natural healing methods to address various ailments. Tells you WHAT YOU CAN DO TO HELP YOURSELF. Be your own best Doctor. The author also includes information on herbs which is invaluable. She also lists contraindications where there should be a warning if used with prescription drugs. Her first book, Prescription for Nutritional Healing, was so good that I couldn't resist purchaing the companion volume on healing with herbs. I also purchased a copy of this book for my brother-in-law and had Amazon ship it to him. He has found help through this book also. I would highly recommend this book, as well as, the author's first book.

Top choice book for herbal healing.
This book is a very good choice for anyone who is interested in using herbal medicine. If you enjoyed Prescription for Nutritional Healing, but were disapointed with the amount of herbal information, you should get this book. I find that it is a great supplement to Prescription for Nutritional Healing. Both books have awesome information. The only thing that I found to be a little dissapointing was that Phyllis only goes through half as many diseases and disorders in Herbal Healing than in Nutritional Healing. (In Nutritional Healing she goes through over 300, and only about 150 in Herbal Healing.) However, she is very thorough with the information of more than 200 main herbs and herbal formulas. I turn to this book again and again, along with Prescription for Nutritional Healing, for all of my health questions.

Excellent reference book on herbal healing
A herbal reference book, with clear easy to use layout. The information is presented in bullet points and notes of critical common sense information. No padding or waffle information. All Phyllis Balch books are excellent. Exceptionally high recommendation for this author.
