Read aloud - found the answer to every question that may arise in our minds.
I read this lovely book aloud to the children. Young as well as teen aged. A treasury of lessons for them and valuable reminders to a mother as well. Originally borrowed from the library, and become one of our favorites so we included it in our home library as a keeper. My favorite lines - "We know not why He so orders events; we only know the whatever He so orders, is wisest for our eternal good. We cannot understand this now. He Himself has said, 'What I do thou knowest not now, but thou shalt know hereafter;' and this out to answer every question on the subject that may arise to our minds." Indeed! Truly I have found the answer to all life's questions in John 13:7

The Basket of flowers
This is a great book. I stayed up and read the book and it was so refreshing and uplifting to me. I recommend it for any young convert and any young person who wants to have an idea of what their christian walk looks like.

A couple of troubling points about a sweet story
This is a charming story, but nonetheless, it bothers me on a couple points. First, Mary and her father are portrayed as sinless. They never do or say anything they shouldn't. Although they suffer unjustly, they never chafe at it, always respond in a godly way. The problem is, no one is like this. We are all sinners. I know hundreds of people, many of whom are Christ-following Christians, but no one is this good. So it sets up an unrealistic ideal for the reader. Even my 8-year-old son noticed this. Secondly, and more importantly, although God and faith are mentioned often, and it's clear that is where the protagonists' strength comes from, the Gospel and the Cross do not feature in the story, as the means of grace by which we live. The only hope we have is through Him, not through our own good behavior.
