Julianne Moore, Ellen Page, Michael Shannon and Steve Carell star in this American drama written by Ron Nyswaner. Based on a true story, the film follows the struggle of lesbian police detective Laurel Hester (Moore) to have her pension transferred to her domestic partner, mechanic Stacie Andree (Page), after she is diagnosed with lung cancer. As she faces up to her terminal illness, Laurel takes her fight to the Ocean County, New Jersey Board of Chosen Freeholders and is forced to repeatedly appeal their decision to achieve recognition of her domestic partnership, making national headlines in the process with the help of equality activist Steven Goldstein (Carell). Laurel continues the fight to get financial security for her lover from her deathbed with help from various members of the New Jersey community including her loyal colleague Dane Wells (Shannon).

a deeply sensitive portrayal of heartfelt love and. . .
Moving, emotional - a deeply sensitive portrayal of heartfelt love, romance and the spiritual bond between two women who must face prejudice and forever look over their shoulders. It is also the story of their struggle for justice against a brick wall of opposition while dealing with terminal illness. Commendable performances by Julianne Moore (Laurel Hester) and Ellen Page (Stacie Andree) who bond so well it is impossible to see the acting, indeed the entire cast work well. The cinematography is superb and it is well directed by Peter Sollett. Written by (screenplay) Ron Nyswaner and based on a true story. I enjoyed every minute of it - five stars all day long for everyone involved, even the best boy ok!

Raw and Moving
So raw and moving, this film is scripted with such honesty as it progresses through the decades leading up to the passing of the law which legalised same sex marriage in the US last year. Moore and Page are so, so true and full of emotion, communicating just with their eyes throughout the film. I am so impressed by the talent showcased here, and by the producers for staying as accurate as possible with regards to the true story. A true masterpiece. I am a sobbing wreck and I am in awe.

This is the remake
On the plus side, excellent performances by Julianne Moore, Ellen Page and Michael Shannon. A story well told and an honest look at how to campaign to get stuff changed even if it's things that some people are really opposed to. I also liked the effort put in by the main characters to stop the whole thing being turned into a circus.Best of all, Lauren and Stacie were presented so well as to make identification easy even for someone who has nothing in common with them, so well done to all involved. On the minus. Ellen Page looks far too young to play Stacie Andree (as is made clear from the footage of the two women at the end of the film). Perhaps this brings into perspective the differences in age often shown between male and female characters throughout Hollywood. Regardless, that's a minor issue. The big issue for me though is why remake a film only eight years after the original? I mean come ON folks there are countless writers out there struggling to make ends meet many with highly original blockbuster ideas if only the films were made instead of some remake, especially one so recent.

Could have been a much more moving experience.
I was actually very looking forward to watching "Freeheld" – I was even planning to go to the cinema to catch it (London Film Festival material, no less!). Ah well, I watched it one lazy evening and, even though some strings of my soul were touched, I generally felt unmoved by this very well, it seems, calculated piece of cinema aimed at the awards. Sadly, there is no amazing chemistry between the actors and the entertainment comes in the form Steve Carell.Although somewhat interesting to watch from the historic point of view. So definitely watch if you are interested in the topic.

Bring tissues
A very moving film about a dying woman who spent her last days fighting for her right to leave her pension benefits to the woman she loves. As stated, "her right", so there should have been no need to fight for it.Everything about this movie was done well, I really enjoyed it, (as much as you can "enjoy" a sad film) and I would watch it again. There are a small minority that wouldn't enjoy this. You know who you are, so don't watch this and leave negative reviews based solely on your small minded views.

Moore is moving but Page is perfection
I'm not sure 'good' is the right way to describe this film. It's thought-provoking and heart-breaking, whilst at the same time being warm and sensitive. Great performances by Ellen Page and Julianne Moore, but also the other smaller parts were also brilliantly acted which helped to make this film the complete package. Sadly a true story, but one that changes many peoples' lives. Worth watching just for that.

Just watch it, it's a great life story with great cast,it will keep you totally captivated.
As a sentimental guy who enjoys comedies to get a entertainment charged escape from the mandainity of a long work day..I didn't want to watch this movie. But there was not much left for me to watch on amazon prime,so I went for it.I think I've spent the last 15 minutes of the movie crying...and I'm single, straight and in general have not much in common with those characters. It's an amazing story and I think that Julianne Moore is absolutely brilliant in it together with the whole cast. But that story is truly powerful, it cut right into my soft tissue, I really enjoyed it a lot!I do recommend it to everyone who wants to see great performance, great story and have their emotional kick out of it with an reconciliating ending to it as well.
