Dr. Martens is the stuff of legends. It all began near Munich, Germany in 1945 when Dr. Klaus Maertens injured his foot in a skiing accident in the Bavarian Alps. To make walking easier during the healing process, he designed a shoe with an air-cushioned sole. Using old rubber tires, he constructed soles that had air trapped within closed compartments. He showed his prototype to his engineer/inventor friend, Dr. Herbert Funck, and together they decided to develop and produce the shoes. Not only did the shoe solve the doctor's immediate problem, but it also started to sell well in Germany. By 1959 the two decided that they needed a company to produce and distribute the shoes, then called Dr. Maertens, in other parts of the world. At first, many manufacturers rejected the concept of an air cushioned sole as a short-lived gimmick. However, the R. Griggs Group, located in the village of Wollaston in England, decided to go along with the idea by creating the first work boot with the revolutionary sole. On the first of April 1960, the first cherry red eight-eyelet work boot was produced and named 1460. To sell the brand name better in England, the name was anglicized to Dr. Martens. The range was branded AirWair and the rest is history.

Great boots, but small around calf.
I must first say I own two other pairs of Doc's, the Doc Martens for Life 1460 and a pair of the non-for life 1460. I loved them both, still have both, the for life is considerably better quality between the two. I wanted a pair of high boots for hiking etc. However, I was dismayed with this boot. My wife owns the exact same 1940, fits perfectly, so I know its just me. The leather quality is as great as there vintage, nor as great as the for life but exceedingly good. Better then TUC but less then Gripfasts without the cost of Fry's. Meaning for the price I paid 76 after 50% off I truly stole them. But, as I mentioned before.... I hike... A lot, and horse back ride, so I have large calfs, the last 4 eyelets wouldn't come over the tongue of the shoe and tying it tighter just cut into my skin. These would have been amazing boots for the cost, I'm saddened by the inability to fit into them... So while I rate these 5 star I'll have to return them and move on to find a large calfed size boot.I'll add my calf size as reference, I'm 17in at the top where the boot somed to rest.I hope you love these boots as much as I do, and plan to continue buying there low calf boots. As a note, these boots need a lot of work "out of the box," the leather is stiff, dry, they need oiling and wearing to break in. My wife's have lasted well over 6 years with regular saddle oilings and some mink oil in-between. Lather these in mineral oil if you can't get saddle oil.Good luck!

First brand new pair of Dr. Martens since I was 16
I have been wearing Dr. Martens since I was a teenager (15 years!) and I hadn't had a new pair since then because they last so long! My last pair are still in good shape, they're just a too narrow for me to wear now so it was time to get a new pair. I went with the steel toe boots this time and I'm glad I did, I really like steel toe look better than the non steel toe boots. They're mens boots so they are wider in the foot which is exactly what I needed. I LOVE these boots! They fit great even with tights and socks on! I've had these beauties for about a week now and I have worn them EVERY day to get them broken in asap. I only got blisters the first day I wore them because the socks I had on were too thin. The next day I doubled up on my socks and haven't had any issues since. They were pretty stiff for the first couple days, but then I got some leather conditioner and that helped to soften.

Love these Doc's
These boots are the business!!! Mine are Black 9M or UK8, they fit perfect no insoles, although insoles would work fine. I like my boots to look unworn so mine last about a year or so depending before I replace.TAKE NOTE: These will put a serious hurting on you when you first get them and start getting the ankles broken in. Wear thick socks and limit how long you wear them until this stage unless you like blisters and raw spots. Make sure they fit right when you get them and wear them around the house a week or two is the easy way.

Still an amazing boot!
Docs are just as awesome as I remember them, total hell to break in though. I haven't owned a pair of Doc Marten's since my younger punk days. I decided to purchase the same ones I used to run around in back in the day. The 1940, 14 eye, steel toe. I got the size UK 10 / US 11 and they fit pretty damn great out of the box. It's going to take some patience to break in the leather and soften it up, as expected. Overall I have always loved the shape of this boot. A I little bit taller with the steel toe just looks classic combat boot to me. The quality is just a good as I remember too and yes these are made in China and not in the UK now. I guess its typical to outsource production and it is what it is I guess but despite all of that, Doc Marten's are still the best boot out there.

I think i paid 39.00 for these?? So cgeap i nought 2 pairs. Now they are 160.00. Not like old docs. These are pretty uncomfortable to wear for a long break in period. 5 stars for the price. It was a steal

Great boots!
Docs have always been a staple for the work I do, but I've never bought 14-hole boots before. The sizing (UK - 11) was perfect for me, but if you're a straight 12, it may be a bit loose (I'm about a 12 and a half). The texture is great. "Haircell"? No idea, but it's sort of a matte finish that looks great. When I took them out of the box, there was a mark on one of the uppers that looks like a line just a litte lighter than the leather. Kind of a like a faint 4" chalk line that took a bit of buffing to hide. Other than that, these are great boots! A bit stiff at first, but in less than a week, they are getting very comfortable (as Docs always do).**CAVEAT** - THESE BOOTS ARE MADE IN CHINA, not the U.K., but the quality control is much better than most products from China. I knew this going in, so it wasn't a surprise. UK made versions cost about triple the China versions.

I ended up stitching a loop on top of each "tongue" like some tennis shoes and thread the lace through them ...
The "tongues" slide to the sides after walking around for a few steps and it bunched up and pressed against the top side of my foot and it was hurting. I ended up stitching a loop on top of each "tongue" like some tennis shoes and thread the lace through them and corrected that problem. And lacing up the high top takes forever. I should have bought the one with zipper on the sides. Love the looks and that's about it.

he loves them and they look great. His only complaint is how hard they are ...
Bought these as a gift for my boyfriend, he loves them and they look great. His only complaint is how hard they are to break in, but that's to be expected with a good quality boot! If you purchase these put a bandaid on your heel and wear two pairs of socks for the first couple weeks. It'll help them not hurt your feet/legs or rub spots raw while the leather gets worked to fit your build.

Poor quality uppers.
Purchased in May 2012 and initially I was very satisfied. By christmas the uppers had split just below the lacing and were no longer waterproof. I would still like a pair of Dr. Martens, but is this the usual lifespan or were they inferior quality? I.e seconds? Your advice would be appreciated.

Really Pleased
I bought these Docs over 2 years ago and they're still going strong. They arrived quickly and look amazing, and because they have a steel toe they don't have the "drooping" toe that normal Docs get after wearing them for a while.
