5/5 Stars: Another Hilarious Adventure in the Dog Man Series!
Dog Man: The Scarlet Shedder is the twelfth installment in Dav Pilkey’s beloved series, and it did not disappoint! My 8-year-old and I eagerly awaited this release, and it was worth every bit of the anticipation.Pros:1. Engaging Storyline: The plot is fast-paced and full of humor, featuring Dog Man on another wild adventure. This time, he faces off against a villainous cat and deals with issues of friendship and loyalty, which makes for a fun and relatable read.2. Fantastic Illustrations: The art is vibrant and entertaining, with Pilkey’s signature style that keeps the pages lively. The comic book format makes it easy to follow, and my child loved the dynamic panels and action sequences.3. Positive Messages: Beyond the humor and action, the book includes great lessons about kindness, teamwork, and the importance of making good choices. It’s always refreshing to see these themes woven into a fun story.4. Perfect for Young Readers: The language is accessible, making it ideal for early readers and reluctant ones. My child is not a huge fan of reading, but this series has truly captured their interest and has encouraged them to read more.Cons:1. Short Length: Like the other books in the series, this one is relatively short. My child finished it quickly and was left wanting more! However, this also makes it a great choice for kids who might be intimidated by longer novels.Overall, Dog Man: The Scarlet Shedder is another hit in the series that keeps kids laughing while delivering valuable life lessons. If your child enjoys the previous Dog Man books, this one is a must-read! We can’t wait for the next installment!

reading what my patrons check out
In an attempt to make sure I’m doing the best librarian-ing I can, I’ve challenged myself to read at least one book I see my patrons check out a month, and this is January’s choice (mostly to make sure my program plan is on point for the movie release party we’re doing) but omg how cute, I loved the end annotations where Pilkey provides some more information for his readers. There were several actual laugh out loud moments while I was reading. Super excited for the movie (and for my library program)

Engaging for first and second graders
My grandchildren are in first and second grade and are absolutely wild over the dog man books. We have purchased the entire set and the kids read themselves in their own rooms every night, and can’t wait to start the next one. Other than the magic treehouse, we haven’t found such a Satisfying and engaging set of early chapter books. Wish there were more. Grandson will go onto Captain underpants, but granddaughter doesn’t like that set. (first grade boy humor.)
