Reasonably priced and efficient shave scuttle
In the style of Nick Shabbaz, I’ll use his The Good, The Great, The Bad and The Ugly format for this review. I’ve used the scuttle for a month’s worth of shaves since I bought it and I chose the white model.Good:The price is reasonable and it’s good to find an accessible scuttle. They can be hard to find and expensive when you do find them.It arrived quickly and was very securely wrapped and packaged, in an attractive box with a cut to fit foam insert. So there’s little chance of it being damaged in transit. The size is larger than I expected but it does allow you to create enough lather for a multiple pass shave.Great:It’s very easy to use. Simply fill it up with warm / hot tap water in the inner lining and the bowl and you can use it to soak your shaving brush as well providing warm lather. The scuttle works best with softer soaps or shaving creams, such as TOBs or Trumpers. The ridges around the sides and the bobbles in the base, enable you easily to create a soft and warm creamy lather.I found it best to use a small or medium brush, so you can get to the soap or cream at the bottom of the scuttle. It does what it says. It warms your lather and keeps it warm, adding a luxurious feel to your shaves. You very quickly become used to having warm lather and it’s noticeable when your lather isn’t warm.Bad:The listing said that the scuttle would come with a cork stopper. It didn’t. Mine arrived with a white plastic stopper, which I actually prefer. However, for the price paid, I would have liked them to have included at least a couple of stoppers, which would not have added anything to the cost, just in case the one they send goes missing.Despite the bowl being quite large, using larger knotted brushes means you cannot easily reach the bottom of the scuttle. If you are using a brush larger than a 22mm knot, I’d recommend sticking to face lathering. Small brushes work really well however. For harder soaps, I’d suggest face lathering, as the scuttle despite the ribs and bobbles, is too smooth for it.I’m not a fan of having QShave in prominent black ink, permanently printed on the side of the scuttle. No need for it at all in my opinion.Ugly:There is only one ugly thing using this scuttle. When it’s full of water and you’re lathering up, it can be heavy, slippery and awkward to hold. The handle is made of quite thin porcelain and has no grips at all. Unless you lay the scuttle down on your sink top, or hold it with your thumb through the handle, there’s a good chance it could slip from your hands. Don’t hold it by the handle alone!Overall I really like it.

Great addition to my shaving den
If you're like me you'll have been drawn to this scuttle because of the ability to have hot lather. The ridges inside were also a selling point. I tried the bowl a few times with hot water from the tap and found there wasn't really a detectable difference in the temperature of the lather. To really see a difference you need to pour in boiling water from a kettle. The scuttle then keeps your lather warm for 20 minutes or so, at least until you've finished shaving. The ridges in the bowl work well for lathering and it's a decent size. I only have 2 problems with it. One is the QShave logo on the side. They need to get a better logo...it just doesn't look great. The other problem is the small cork stopper. While it does the job I don't think it'll last long. Fortunately replacements can be bought cheaply online and the ones i found were actually better than the original.

Does what it says on the tin....nearly
The idea behind this piece of kit is simple: fill with boiling/hot water, whip up your shaving soap with a brush and hey presto, a bowl full of luxurious warm lather! And in effect it works, it does keep it warm. Unfortunately there is a downside, lather is not reknowned for its heat retaining qualities and within mere seconds of applying to your face, head or wherever, it drops to the same temerature as if you used a plain bowl. Therefore, this item's main selling point is largely ineffective. However, as a shaving bowl, hot or not, it performs very well indeed. The ridges etc in the bowl enables you to really get a good lather going. It's a pattern used in many shaving mugs past and present and used for good reason, it works. One thing needs pointing out though, when it is filled with water it pretty much doubles in weight so a flat surface may be needed when lathering up. So is the QSHAVE shaving scuttle a waste of money? If you want scalding hot lather on your face then probably yes it is. If, on the other hand you want a very well made shaving bowl that performs and also looks the business then its an empthatic no. Bearing in mind you can pay well in excess of £30 for a generic porcelain shaving mug with a 'brand' or designer name printed on it, £25 odd for this excellent bit of kit isn't bad value for money.

Great product.
I’ve had this for a month and I really like the product. Unfortunately today the rubber cork slipped into the hole it plugs and it doesn’t seem possible to get it back out.Edit: I’m changing my review from a 3 star to a 5 star. The cork did slip inside once, and I needed to use a corkscrew to get it out. As it’s made of rubber you can’t see any marks from this happening. As it’s only happened once I think perhaps I may have pushed too hard and it was my fault.I’ve just got into shaving with both a safety razor and a straight razor. Having a good scuttle is essential if you are going to use the 3 pass method. As long as I don’t drop this I think it will last forever.

What a well designed and effective product!
This shaving mug was delivered ahead of time and was very nicely packaged. I have been using a plain mug to lather up some Tailor of old Bond street shaving cream, but for second passes, with my Merkur 38c DE, the cream was cold. I have used a heated scuttle before with straight razor shaving, but it's somewhere in storage, so I bought this one. I have to say, that it easily out performed my previous scuttle (which I thought was very good), and at the end of the second pass, the cream was still very comfortably warm on my face. The plug work's very well and the bowl is easy to use and hold with a solid handle. The groves help to lather up effortlessly. Highly recommended!
