This stuff is so good and such high quality it's something that anyone who loves fish sauce should give this a taste at some point in their life. My husband is not a fish sauce type of guy but when I added this stuff to his food, he ate it up. It's good stuff and worth the price. It's super rich compared to regular fish sauce and the flavor is more complex. It definitely has the umami and the smell isn't as intense. It's sooo good.

Not much to say other than unless you live in Southeast Asia and know someone in the business who owns a small fish sauce brewery, you're not going to find better fish sauce than Red Boat. It is the fish sauce of choice of those in Southeast Asia who can afford it. It's easy in a side by side to taste the difference. Family Reserve is the best of the best. It is the fish sauce equivalent of extra virgin olive oil, first pressing. It's just the best. It's not overpoweringly fishy tasting, nor is it too salty. Even regular Red Boat is better than the competition. If you spring for the extra money to get it, you will not go wrong.

The real deal! This product is the top-of-the-line offering from the premier maker of Fish Sauce. It is genuinely a flavor enhancer when attempting to bring the best out of one's meal preparation.

There's only one problem with this sauce. The regular version is just as good and you get a bigger bottle for the same price. Don't get me wrong, this is the brand I always buy because it's the best on the market (I would buy this version every time if it wasn't for the regular stuff). But, the upgraded family reserve isn't any better than the regular stuff IMHO. If you want to compare between this version and the regular... This version is a bit less "fishy". It is slightly more unctuous, smoother, not so much in your face. It is wonderful as a flavoring, but stays a bit in the background, whereas the normal version is a bit more in your face flavor-wise.

This fish sauce let me turn that corner on fried rice. Finally it tastes RIGHT!

A fish sauce by any other name would smell as smelly? I will preface this review by stating that this fish sauce is great and I use it all the time to cook. I love it and it gets me the taste I am looking for.However the smell, as is expected with fish sauces like this, is weapons-grade. Upon initial opening of the sauce, my computer files were immediately de-indexed, my dog was neutered and my tax refund was delayed by a week. The smell is so strong that even Chuck Norris checks his closet for Red Boat Fish Sauce instead of the Boogeyman. A single drop was enough to cause a kitchen-wide evacuation - but once integrated into my sauce, it delivered a subtle and indescribable flavor that elevated my dish to new levels.The price is right and the sauce is good! Highly recomend!

Never used fish sauce until stumbling across a YouTube video of them. Wanted to try something new and support a smaller business. Definitely unique flavor that some people will not like unless it small amounts. Try it before you smell it. The smell will put you off. But a lot of dishes I throw some in cooking for a unique umami backprofile.
