It allows easy access without the clam shell and stuff falling out. This made packing a breeze and the luggage holders in the hotel worked perfectly with it. When using the matching carryon they also nest for easy storage. I fly United and had no problems with this bag’s size. The luggage came back after my flight without a scratch or scuff. The rolls very easy both when loaded and empty. I feel for the price and quality you are not going wrong with this bag and get good value for your money. I will add one last thing which may be a negative for some users of clam shells. You don’t have a separate area at the end of a trip for dirty clothes. You can lower the center flap part and use it as a divider or pack a cube for dirty clothes. This is not a problem for me as I wash everything after a trip.
