Brought my 25 year old Wilkins 600 back to life
Summary - brought my old and pitted unit back to life using a #74 o-ring.I have a 25 year old 1-1/4 inch Wilkins 600 regulator that hasn’t been working properly for some time. Bought this rebuild kit from another supplier because Amazon was out of stock, but the price here is much better than the red G folks. Parts in the kit were as pictured in this listing and I used them all except for the gasket for the plumbing union. Didn’t have to take apart the union. Installation is easy and straightforward. The printed instructions in the box don’t quite match the parts you receive in the 1-1/4” kit but that was okay because once you open the regulator up you find that the old parts inside match the actual parts you receive. The available web videos and Zurn’s own instructions say that if the small bore inside the regulator body is deeply pitted then it’s toast and you will have to purchase a new regulator. I think you are supposed to open up your unit, check inside, put it back together, and then either order a repair kit or a whole new unit. I didn’t do that, and the bore inside my regulator body was corroded and pitted. Ah well, might as well try the repair. My regulator was pretty grody inside. The small o-ring that mates with the bore was simply missing and the rest of the rubber seals and diaphragm were deformed and not pliable. The adjustment screw was bottomed out, corroded inside and all remaining parts had a lot of corrosion and calcium deposits. All except the filter screen. That was just about spotless. Go figure.I soaked inside of the bell with some rust remover for a few hours and the adjustment bolt could then move properly. I smoothed out the bore as best I could with some emery cloth as suggested, and then the whole thing went back together easily enough. Didn’t quite work correctly - the pressure would go to the set levels but then creep slowly back up to street pressure. Figured that I didn’t do a good enough job de-pitting the bore so I want back to 150 grit emery cloth on it and kept at it until they were gone, following up with 240 grit and then 400 grit. Wet/dry sandpaper wrapped around a dowel, spun with a motorized drill. It worked much better after the serious sanding and polishing job, but still kept creeping back up to street pressure. Pretty sure I widened the bore a bit too much, but that was fixable with a different o-ring.The o-ring supplied with the 1-1/4 inch kit is a #8 ring, with 3/8 inch inside diameter and 9/16 inch outside diameter. My local hardware store had a #74 ring available, with 3/8 inch inside diameter and 39/64 inch outside diameter. This one did the trick in my reamed out unit.I’m very happy with Zurn. This is a useful repair kit for good regulator. It’s always nice to be able to keep old equipment operational.
