The description and questions portion do not match up. One says it's 17" wide, the other says it's 8.5 x 11. Which is it?

The one I purchased was just over 17 inches x 11 inches

Do you need a pump to inflate this pillow?

No you do not need a pump. I take these traveling because sometimes there may not be enough pillows. (I like extra). They travel flat, do not take much room in suitcase. If needed, it takes less than 5 minutes to blow up. Inexpensive, but durable.

below here under 'product details' it says product dimensions: 5 x 1 x 6 inches..... this must be a typo? in another section of the site 17"x11"

Hello The pillow size it self is the 17" x 11" dimension. The 5" x 1" x 6" is the size of the box it comes in. Directly under this in the product details is the shipping weight. Sorry for the confusion I hope this helps.

Approximately 8.5" x 11". Inflated, those dimensions are smaller but rises about 4". Lays flat when fully deflated (except for valve).

Good for the field or camping

Good for the field or camping. Easy to pack, reasonably comfortable. Color is in regs and easy to inflate. They're not huge but are a good compact size and better than nothing.

More comfy than expected

There is a valve inside the inflation tube so pinch it hard with your fingers or bite on it while inflating and deflating to make it go much faster and easier. The pillow is a good height and more comfy than I expected. You can adjust the softness by letting a little air out. It even comes with one repair patch. Nice little pillow for a good price. I have yet to sleep on it but I will be using it as a bottom pillow to support my tiny memory foam camping pillow.
