If you are using power do you still need the battery?

Yes. The gate opener works off of the battery.You still need power to charge the battery though, whether it be Solar or AC power

My batteries died after a year even with the 10 watt solar charger. Do I need more solar panels or is this battery just not rechargeable?

I installed two solar panels to charge my three battery power, two of the batteries are rechargable any the back up battery is a regular lawnmower style This system seems to work fairly well after about a year only a couple of gate stalls , reset seem to work , it seems to me, the more solar panels installed the better the reliability the system, my system is double 8 foot gates,

Yes this battery (like a car battery) is intended to stay connected to the system and the system normally charges the battery except when the power is out.
