Good product but read support docs carefully
As with most products now, the instructions in the box are skimpy. But shortly after purchase the manufacturer sent an unsolicited email with a link to online support in case a purchaser needs more info. The instructions there are detailed and turned up something surprising: With at least some computers, you'll need to click a box changing the default from Region 4 to Region 1. With DVDs, the US is in Region 1. Easy to do. But frustrating if you don't realize you need to do it.

Does just what I need it to do.
My PC unexpectedly fried and my laptop was not equipped to burn photos to discs. This external drive has been a great addition to accomplishing this at a very reasonable price. Use is intuitive and, in my case, it was better for me not to use their user manual .pdf they sent me unprompted in an email. (This demonstration of a sincere effort that they want to make sure that they are covering all bases to ensure their customers are successful using their product is an unexpected plus.) The customer service is really on top of things, too. They are lightning fast at responding which is also a wonderful surprise.

Great Plug and Play
I just got it today as stated and the reviews were right- I connected it to my laptop and immediately played, ripped my 2 CD's with no hitch. I hope this is not a premature review but if it will last as I hope, then I really impressed. My only complaint is there should be more info in the small and very brief manual and it came in its store box - not much padding like what Amazon usually does specially with what I think a machine should be amply and safely packaged. It felt solid, not flimsy at all. I feel like it could easily fit in my thin laptop case pr even a medium size purse. If it lasts for a long time, then it is more than worth the cost. The 2 cables ( connecting cables are short but adequate and a big plus is one of the two is imbedded at the bottom of the item- so there is no chance of it getting lost. There is nothing in the manual identifying the cords that came with it- or their specific uses. The eject button worked beautifully. The speed by which it ripped my CDs' was good but could be faster- I am.notcomplaining tho. I have not burnt copies yet so I do not know how that could be. By the way, I do not know if I need to charge theMachine to power it- because the manual does.not have information about that. I am of the older generation ans not so familiar with connections.

Great Product, Great Price
This is a very high quality product for the price. Works great with my older MacBook air. Great way to watch movies on my off-grid property when I want to save my solar batteries. I use a lot less power watching dvd's on my MacBook with this player. Also great for trips, and it also has a power plug if you need it. It's no necessary for use with my computer.

Ease of use
I purchased this item a couple of weeks ago and have downloaded over 200 cd's to itunes on my wife's laptop since.Really just plug and play. It was ready to use within seconds after I plugged the unit into the laptop.

Snazzy drive
Very useful DVD drive. I got it for my Sony handycam 8cm mini DVDs and it works great. The extra slots for USB and SD card is very handy. The drive itself is a little bigger than handheld and it is very portable in its protective case. I'd say it is a good value for the money.

Great and Cheap
It works super well. You don't need a separate ac charger. Love the case it comes with too. I highly recommend.

Not sure about this one.
I realize that this is only my experience, and perhaps not that of the average buyer of this item. The first thing I'm going to mention was that I was really thrown off by the fact that the item was sent in a very thinly padded envelope. I hope that whoever packages these sees my review and reaches out to me about that, because it is unacceptable to send peripherals through the mail with next to zero protection... I really don't know how stupid someone can be to think that's a good decision. Zero protection around the thin cardboard box containing the external drive, next to nothing inside of the box except the thin plastic holding the device and plugs, and while the drivers around my area are very careful, it doesn't help to know that the item could have been flung around a million times until it got to the delivery truck. I therefore cannot ascertain that it didn't have an impact -no pun intended.I should also mention that I had an IT career and am particularly good with solving hardware issues. My local library lends out external hard drives of this brand, though without all of the additional slots and conveniences built in; you just pop in either the USB-C or USB-B ports, pop in the DVD, and it'll do nothing more for you than exactly what you would expect it to do. Why would I think this one would be any different? It took me over 2 hours to get this to do its basic job. I had to figure out which port and plug combo to pop into my very well functioning Windows 10 laptop before I got it to recognize the drive even once, and even now it's still randomly requiring me to use a different combo. There's actually no logical reason for that except for some kind of circuit board glitch on the device itself, and I made sure to thoroughly test my laptop and rule it out. I then had to figure out why it was playing certain DVDs for just a few seconds, some not at all, a few with a particular video player software package but not others, etc. There was very little consistency in what it was playing nice with. I also discovered after digging a little through the settings that this was set to Region 2 with only four more changes of region allowed. Drivers are generic, which is a little odd in itself considering it has multiple functions and therefore various ways to designate computer resources. I have never seen that default region problem on a plug and play device in many years, so I set it to Region 1 since I'm in the U.S., and that seemed to get it to recognize every DVD attempted after completely rebooting my computer and popping it back in from scratch. Then I had to figure out which video player would consistently run both the audio and video components of a given DVD. To its credit, the device read SD cards just fine, and I appreciate the shell the company included for the micro ones.I was also disappointed that the company's website does not contain any drivers or firmware or installation bundles that a more savvy user could download and install or uninstall or whatever. It's basically a support request page and a way for them to promote their product lines. Not cool. To be fair, the little pamphlet in the box was easy enough for a basic user to understand and use troubleshoot if necessary. I don't doubt that this device does not pose any problems for the average user using an average system, but the average user will probably give it a couple of shots before returning it or contact tech support (noting that I will not take this step because there is literally nothing they can tell me to adjust that I have not already done myself; that's not me patting myself on the back, but simply saying that I've done that job, I know all the steps, and additional experience allows me to not have to trouble anybody else)... and I can totally understand why. Someone reading this may find it absurd that I put in the time to even deal with this, but I am a problem solver by nature and wanted to ensure that I did everything I could (including other things I did not list here) before determining that this was a bad purchase. I'm still not convinced it was the best one, but certainly not the worst one. Sometimes we should be a little skeptical of any inexpensively made electronic device that has too many functions built in or arrives virtually unprotected through the mail, and this one justified that line of thinking.Overall, I am generously giving it three stars because the device DOES work, and I will keep an eye on it with the understanding that if it behaves like an unpredictable idiot any further within the next two weeks, then I am going to return it and add an update here.

An excellent unit
I got this external DVD drive 2 weeks ago, and tried it out extensively before writing this review.Things I like about this product:1- It works well right out of the box. I have Windows and Linux systems, and works fine with both. I don't have Apple, but reading the instruction, that system will recognize the DVD writer once there is a disc inside.2- It seems to be well built. It is of course made with plastic like all the other writers, so inherently fragile, but everything clicks properly. So far I have used it mostly for burning DVDs, about 12 so far, and it has done so without errors. The speed is in line with other writers.3- The carrying case. There is another unit, that seems to be the same but without it, for a few dollars less. I suggest you buy this one, as the case is surprisingly well made, and will offer real protection.4- The warranty. It has an 18 months warranty, already longer than most, and the company offers a free 2 years extension. I don’t know of any other company that does that.5- It has an extra power supply cable, in case your laptop is not strong enough to power it. That must be a rare circumstance, it doesn’t take more power than others, but it is a nice touch.Things I don’t particularly like: Only one: the cable. It is short and while this is not a problem with laptops, actually could be a plus, to connect it to a usb port at the back of a tower, as suggested by the instructions, would be difficult. Also, it is hard wired to the unit, and stores very neatly in the back, a plus in that you will never lose it, a minus in that if it get damaged you cannot change it.All in all, I recommend it as it appears to be an excellent product.
