The media could not be loaded. I originally bought several "Unfinished" nesting doll sets of varying numbers and shapes on the web. THIS particular set was the most versatile and exceptionally well finished. No sanding needed ready to paint.If the pieces are tight they will loosen with time. Turn them multiple times and they should loosen enough to work with. Consider that children will play with them and they will get very loose with time.I am making heirlooms for my grandchildren and nephew/nieces. In this particular piece I made my nephew and all the characters for "The Mitten" story. It does have small pieces so you MUST watch your child while they play with it. This is not a toy to leave unattended with young ones. BUT IF YOU WANT a truly traditional Russian nesting doll they generally have 10 pieces or more to the set as they generally tell a story. 7-5 piece nesting dolls are so simple and children tire of them quickly unless the artist is extremely creative. The quality is very good, the They were hard to work with, not only due to shape but they had large knot blemishes and many needed sanding.If for some reason you get a broken or messed up doll I'm confident you can get a replacement doll and reimbursed. I haven't had an issue but I see some folks did. Just return it and reorder as accidents happen.. You won't be disappointed ! I've just ordered 4 more of them. Oh.. I forgot to mention the price... they are VERY reasonable..... Wishing you the best on your nesting doll project!

Update after 3 years - the original set is holding up very very well. I've bought three additional sets and most recently made one for my other child. They vary slightly in size set to set but the quality has improved in the more recent ones. I will keep buying these as it is an awesome product.I love how there are 10 nesting dolls. Most sets only have 5-6. The third largest fits together too tightly so I need to sand it down a tad. The largest one is too loose. The second smallest has a crack and needs to be repaired. All of these are minor issues that I can fix myself so this is still a great deal.I plan to paint them as animals for my toddler.Updating with an image of the finished product. They painted so nicely and im now going to buy another set as a gift.

I read other reviews and was worried there might be holes in the bottom on these nesting dolls, but I was happy to see that there are not. They are smooth and beautiful wood. Only one had a putty spot over a dark wood knot, but that is not an issue at all once the pain goes over it. These also fit very nicely-- not too tight-- just right! Thank you for a quality product at a good price.

I was shocked how large the first doll is compared to the last one. It does feel like the increase in size quite rapidly because the last one is smaller than a pencil eraser. The quality felt fragile, if I pushed to hard while sanding, like I could crack it. If you are gentle, these can really shine. I loved how my nativity scene came out. The wood after sanding accepted the acrylic paint pleasantly, and I finished it off with Krylon triple thick crystal clear glaze making it look expensive. I recommended these, a lot of potential for the creative.

Bought these to do a gender reveal for my friends. They fit well together and come together and apart perfectly: snug enough to stay together but also easy to pull apart and put back together. They took paint very well, looked great when complete. It is hard to find a plain set with this many dolls, I loved it.

I bought this as a Christmas gift for my niece who enjoys painting. We were really impressed at just how many dolls were in the gift. Felt there was a big gap from the outside doll to the first inside doll but it was still amazing how small they got.

My husband recently had a business trip in St. Petersburg Russia. I asked him to get me a matryoshka doll set while there, but he determined the ones he could afford were of poor quality, so did not buy one. I was disappointed (though he did get me something amazing from the Faberge museum).Anyway, I had a sudden inspiration that I could paint my own (well, I was watching a PBS kids show that featured matryoshka dolls) and immediately visited Amazon to find a blank set. This one caught my attention, especially with the abundance of extra figures. The quality seems perfect for my needs. I've started painting the first one, but it's going to be a long term project since I have an 8 month old to take care of. I'm very happy with this set.
