absolutely hysterically funny
This genre isn't my usual thing. I also don't usually read stories written in the 1st person, as it usually feels like reading someone's diary. But it was free, so i gave it a try.OMG! This was one of the funniest series i've ever read. It doesn't read like a diary at all, but more like your best friend telling what happened to him today. It's also best to not even read what the story is about, because you'll say, oh man, that's so over the top. But when you read it, it flows so organically from normal day to catastrophe after even worse catastrophe and feel the hero's disbelief so internally you start to believe in monsters. After only reading part of the first book, i bought the rest and devoured them. I just couldn't wait to see what happens next.

Good read
Good read. Good characters. My one complaint is all the denial from the main character. If it walks like a demon and quacks like a demon... it's probably a demon.

Funny as Hell!
I have to say I liked this MUCH more than I expected I would. The main character, Lloyd is a slacker. Some of the worst of a stereotypical millennial. Lives at home, fat, out of shape, no job, in debt, can't keep a girlfriend and spends his time playing video games in the basement. He wanders into the corner convenience store to get a slushy with the last of the change he was able to scrounge out of the couch cushions and all hell breaks loose.Out of his element but with a good heart and a lucky streak, he finds himself with a job and, ultimately a purpose to his life.It may be a common trope to thrust someone into a situation for which they are not prepared but eventually prevail, one of the variants of the heroe's journey that is a staple of fiction. Recognizing this not a bad thing, and it is the journey itself that is makes it unique and interesting. With a mix of comedy and horror straight out of Bruce Campbell and the Evil Dead movies (closer to 2 than 3 (which is more fantasy/comedy than horror/comedy) (and yes, even the mentions of these in the book work), Guay spins a fun, exciting thrill ride that leaves you laughing out loud. So much so my wife was giving me weird looks as I was laughing at the book (and quoting great lines to her. "I was butt-clenched-tighter-than-a-pickle-jar-lid scared").Not only is it funny, but her writing style is very cinematic - where I can practically see what is going on, like a great movie or tv show. Part of me wants to see this on screen, but another part fears that some of the great writing would not translate well (so much of the humor is in the Lloyd's head after all).Being a horror novel that is quite a bit of gore, but it feels over the top enough that I find it almost funny itself (much like the scene in the Evil Dead movie where Bruce Campbell is shoved against the cabin wall by what must be a fire house of blood going full blast - so ridiculously excessive that while still a bit gross, it isn't actually scary (or not to me at least)).If there are any drawbacks, this feels more like a collection of linked stories, or to continue the cinematic comparison, a bunch of episodes, rather than a single longer story. That isn't necessarily a bad thing, but unlike other book series that have this same feel, I actually want to go a bit deeper with these characters, and have more than individual encounters strung together. And that is a good thing - finishing a book and immediately wanting more.

WOW
I read over a hundred novels a year. Sometimes way over. I came across this and canโt believe how well written and entertaining it was. Kudos to the author, who I had no idea was a woman until I read the snippet at the end of the book. Just wow.

Great, but the protagonist sucks
So, I love the premise and writing. Its a humorous troma movie mixed with urban fantasy and the sensibilities of a 90s graphic novel.Thing is I cant stand the main character. Hes a loser, and I dont mean loveable loser nerd that you are hoping gets some self worth and the girl.More like neckbeard basement dweller who smells like unwashed clothes BO and stale fast food. Hes clueless the entire book cuz ermahgawd bewbz (he zones out when other chars are explaining how the place works thinking about how hot his coworker is) and spends way too much time thinking about his hard on(s).And he constantly wants to chicken out and quit when things go nuts, but he doesnt bother to learn anything even though all the other characters supposedly tell him whats going on and to read the employee book repeatedly. I get that its a plot device to avoid having to explain too much, but I wish it was less obnoxious (As I mentioned before, he zones out thinking about sex constantly). The other characters are all great, written like larger than life graphic novel characters in text form.

Fun Idea, Execution Needs Work
The premise for the book was kind of interesting, and the tone (sort of light and goofy, as told by a slacker of average intelligence) set the stage for a potentially enjoyable ride. However the actual execution left a lot to be desired. It read less like an author effectively writing AS a slacker of average intelligence, and more like someone of average intelligence actually telling you a story. Times when it seemed to be trying to be funny and even garner laughs, fell a bit flat. And the 1st person narration, written to sound as casual as the main character's demeanor, felt a bit contrived at times and low effort at others. It made the writing just average, and unengaging. I made it 30% through the book and just lost interest. Maybe with some professional editing the potential of these stories could fully be realized.

Quite a fun read
When Lloyd's quest for a slushie goes hellishly sideways, he finds himself with a job that may help him pay off the mountain of debt he's buried under and get to see Deedee, the woman of his dreams. Suddenly, he finds himself chin-deep in demons, oversized bugs, and all the slushies he could want.I don't know that I would call this horror, maybe a dark comedy? I loved it though, it was a hilarious adventure. I will be checking out the rest of the series to find out what else Demon Mart has to offer.Demons, guardian angels, hell gates, incubi, and more, this book will take you through a fun romp.

Fun read
A character driven story, and even at the end the protagonist did not break character.Looking forward to book #2

Unexpected demon in the bagging area...
The Graveyard Shift is a horror comedy that pays tribute to convenience store and other under-appreciated workers everywhere. Out of options, out of money, and mired in a ton of debt, chubby loser Lloyd takes a job in a local convenience store only to discover it's built on a hellmouth.Only this is a regulated hellmouth. Kinda.Lloyd takes a comically long time to come to terms with the supernatural reality of his new job, and while his nocturnal adventures at Demon Mart feel a little episodic to begin with, they tie up in a satisfying conclusion that sets the scene for further adventures.Despite the demonic trappings, and colourfully gory adventures, anyone who's ever worked a minimum wage job will relate incredibly hard to Lloyd's desperation, if not to his wardrobe choices or rampaging hormones...A very entertaining comedy horror novel, not to be missed!

I loved this horror comedy, it's going onto my all time favourites list.
I loved this one, it's going onto my all time favourites list. This was a very easy read, the characters had depth and charisma, the type of humour in this book, the banter between the characters and the 4th wall breaking was perfect. If you like books like PolterGary by Lee Richmond, Hollow Kingdom by Kira Jane Buxton, and Earworm by Aaron Thomas Milstead, or movies like Tucker & Dale vs. Evil or Stan Helsing. Then you will love thisNow I need to get the other book in the Demon Mart series and see what other shenanigans they get up too.

Excellent!
Delightfully entertaining and funny as hell (when you're not the one who doesnโt have a choice to work there, I supposed)... ;)

Brilliant, hillarious and what imagination.
This is one of the best books I've read in ages. After reading D. M. Guay's bit later, I know why I loved it. Same taste in films as kids and totally on same slightly twisted wavelength ๐๐
