A Must-Have for any Flute Player
These practice books hold up nicely over time. The exercises are divided in chunks that allow for rigorous practice without being overwhelming. Wye deconstructs well-known pieces and uses them to build technique, an approach that makes even the most complex pieces seem more approachable. For those who wish to expand their musical knowledge, the books contain some history and theory as well as recommendations for further study. Students of any skill level will find something in this set. The CD is a great for modifying tone and timing. I find the workouts quite enjoyable. Do be aware that Wye uses both sharp and flat notation interchangeably, so be prepared to see A# as much as Bb. Also be on the lookout for ## and bb notations, just to keep you on your toes.

Trevor Wye's masterclass ... a hollistic approach to practice, cut down into manageable daily bite sizes
This is flute teaching at it's best (for all levels who are serious about flute playing) ... Trevor Wye presents a thorough (no stones unturned)& hollistic approach to practice, addressing the 5 key building blocks to proper flute playing - Tone, Technique, Articulation, Intonation & Vibrato, Breathing & Scales - key foundations that is so essential for those seeking to go as far as they can. Great for teachers or the older serious student reference.Key bumps in playing are highlighted (hurdles to overcome as student progresses) and exercises devised to progress the student to the next level. There is scope for continuous advancement and mastery is achieved through the encouragement of "intelligent practice" rather than a dogged mindless grind. The use of repertoire extracts and their transpositions make playing interesting and allow for infinite variations in keys, dynamics, tones to be explored. Through the omnibus, Wye does not demand blind adherence to rigid methods but rather provides key guidemaps and embarks the student on a journey of self-discovery, awakening sharpening the student's senses to what sounds right and how to reproduce it through exploration and proper development of the individual's embourchure, undergirded by a respect of each person's uniqe physiological make up - within the ambit of proper technique and beautiful tone. Breathing, which in my opinion is the biggest limiting factor to effective playing is addressed in Book 5. Throughout the book, coaching tips are found next to key exercises - things for the student to be mindful of during practice and pitfalls to avoid. Advice on the optimal approach to practice (attitude) is covered. The author I think is a born teacher who knows how to impart. I esp appreciate the CD which accompanies Book 1 on Tone - it demonstrates Pitch Bending and more importantly (to me) introduces the student to (what is meant by) Tone Colour with brilliant audio samples of what "Yellow tone" sounds like at one end of the spectrum to "Purple tone" at the other, then proceeds to shade-in the "in betweens". Infinite experimentation and discovery ensues the adventurous. However the undergirding advice is for mastery of the exercise (in bite sizes) before progressing to the next exercise rather than simply rushing forward before achieving quality results. Gem advice for beginners to take short frequent practice spurts rather than languish as the embouchure tires.I am so thankful for stumbling upon this book on Amazon.com as a beginner flutist on the self-teaching route (albeit with planned checking lessons along the way) The Omnibus offers a saving of about 30% from buying each book separately.Important to get the one with the CD. Wish all of them came with CDs! This is like having a masterclass on paper and a CD.Practice gems best gleaned with accompanying book which I found invaluable, "Proper Flute Playing" by same author. Also available via Amazon.

A helpful resource on Flute Method
I purchased the omnibus version after buying the single publication on tone. The Omnibus edition comes spiral bound and the pages can be sometimes unruly...slipping out of the slots of spiral binding and giving an untidy look to your sacred sheets of flute wisdom(which is rather annoying to this already disorganized musician).I refer to the information in the tone section more than any other. The other 'books' in the omnibus were a bit sparse in terms of content. I am glad I spent under 30.00usd on the omnibus instead of buying each book individually. For those musicians with a sense of humor, the writing style of the author is quite fun to read. His discussions are loaded with flute-specific musings, puns, and other subtle rhetoric. His writing style is ingenious...and a relief from the monotoned, sedate style we usually encouter in method publications.

basics for flute that work on oboe
The Trevor Wye flute books have been used in my collegiate oboe studio for years, particularly the volumes covering tonal development and technique. I have also used it myself in my own professional preparation as an oboist. We just ignore the flute specific details and use Wye's systematic approach, adapted here and there to better suit the oboe range. I believe it is best used, or at least introduced, with the guidance of a private teacher. It is not a beginner method for either instrument, but it is the best book on further refinement of playing for a dedicated intermediate or advanced woodwind player that I have seen, presenting clear and direct procedures to guide serious practice. This omnibus edition is a very good value for the money.

Wonderful book!
This book is absolutely wonderful! Only one complaint: It doesn't include the sixth book on advanced practice! It does, however, help with proper playing, be it embouchre, hand positions, posture, technique, tone...This book has it all, and what little is missing can be found in the sixth book, Advanced Practice. The Omnibus has books 1-5, each focusing on different aspects of playing. They are all extremely useful, regardless of one's level of performance, and each book starts from a beginning level, and once each level is mastered, the next exercise is taken, adding only the slightest challenge in order to improve steadily and surely. This is an absolutely amazing book. HIGHLY recommended for all serious flautists!

Buy it for the CD!
Have not played the flute for many years so it took me a bit to even read the exercises but I found myself drawn in to the lessons. Then I played the CD and combined with Mr. Wye's honeyed voice, the sounds illustrating tone were just amazing. Now my only goal is to be able to get close to producing those tones. They also are great just for meditation and for training the ear to nuance and subtlety of tone or sound color. I'm inspired!

Great Flute Book!
This book is full of great exercises to enhance your flute playing. The way he explains things is very helpful and easy to understand. I have noticed a lot of improvement, especially in my tone, since I started using this book. The omnibus edition is also a good deal, considering the books cost $15 individually.

Great book for the serious player
As other reviewers have noted this book is not for the beginner. Excellent, that is exactly why I purchased it! It is 18 years since I passed my grade 8 aged 14. I admit that when you pass your teenage years and don't become a professional musician, practicing technique is not so tempting. However, I have reached a stage where I wish to remind myself of what excellent technique feels and sounds like, hence my purchase of this book. There are some great exercises and the commentary is very helpful. If you're looking for an easy-fix, this is not it. If you are prepared to put in the hard work, these are the exact things you should be focusing on. Over and over again. It really is no replacement for a flute teacher. But if you have a teacher, this is a great accompaniment as long as you practice! If, like me, it's been quite some time since you bothered with improving your technique and you are dedicated to being brilliant, BUY THIS BOOK and spend time practising. Emotional interpretation of music is important but it becomes much better when combined with good technique.
