Great for teaching volume
I'm a science teacher, and I got this kit so I could use it when teaching my students about mass, volume, and density. These 3D shapes have circular sections of one face that can be removed. That's not a design flaw. These are designed to be filled with water, sand, etc. to demonstrate volume.

Love this for my classroom
I love how the shapes are see-through to really allow my students to grasp the sides and vertex !

Excellent hands-on manipulative
This is a perfect hands-on manipulative if you teach any element of geometry. Sometimes it helps students to see exactly what you're referring to in 3D.1/1/12: I'm editing my review now that I've used these more in my class. Since I teach a state testing grade, my students have to know how to do geometry on paper and not just by using manipulatives. This product really helps me bridge that gap. I introduce the concept with these then I move on to counting edges and faces, etc on paper. When my students struggle with the paper portion of it, we go back to these and I let them hold it while counting. Then we refer back to the paper. These have been a life saver in my small groups.I'm not sure if the product description says it, but these have small clear holes that are plugged. The little plugs fall out very easily (con), but the whole point of the holes is to use them to fill and teach volume (pro!). When I first bought these, I intended to use them only for faces, edges, vertices. Now I intend to use them to teach volume, too.I can't say enough good about Learning Resources ans their products.

SPACE COLOR MOTIVATION SACRED
Children need to understand the difference between volume and space. I truly enjoyed being an architect this present for my grandchildren. Because it can depict not only forms, shapes, variations, volumes, colors, but the space inside them…PLATONIC SOLIDS explained thoroughly! Lovely … one of my grandsons was delighted by the possibility of pouring water inside them, and with the little lid to close them…

quite a nice little set
My kiddo has a light box so I got these for him to use with it. I was thinking he would stack them up and probably end up breaking them in short order (he's 3). Much to my surprise he treats these with a great deal of respect. He has learned each of the shapes and he does stack them on his light table but every so carefully. He's so afraid of breaking one. I guess I can't complain and will probably get him another set because he is absolutely in love with them. I think possibly the colors. This is a really nice set. I purchased it because it wasn't as pricey as some of the other "blocks" for light boards and figured they would meet with an unfortunate end. They are still kicking around, he even saved the original box. I know it's not the intended use but if he continues to take care of them they will last until he is old enough to use them.

Great teaching/learning set! Not a toy. it cannot withstand being handled carelessly.
I think they are slightly fragile. They are not toys, and cannot withstand that type of use, for sure. But! As a learning/teaching aid, these things are super cool! They are see through and have an opening, with plug, to fill each shape with water, and demonstrate the concept of volume! I liked them as an introduction into shapes, and when I got them, I saw that they were to teach all about volume too! By far, one of the coolest little sets to have in your classroom/homeschool. They could stand to be a little more sturdy, and durable. I'm afraid to drop them. Also, should come with a graduated cylinder, for filing the shapes, and precise measuring. Needed em for science anyway, so I had to grab a pack of those.

See Thru Success
The box containing these geometric solids exclaims "See inside the world of geometry!" What's puzzling is why the recommended age for this view is ages 8+ or 3rd grade and up. My view is that the earlier you can introduce and excite your young learner about geometric shapes the better. These transparent and colorful shapes are a great supplement to the Learning Resources Soft Foam Geometric Shapes (LER6120). They are also a useful manipulative to have when working on the Sylvan's Second Grade Geometry Success and Third Grade Geometry Success grades. My second grader enjoyed matching the solid foam shapes to the transparent shapes which allowed us to have a discussion about volume and area. It was a revelation to him that triangles come in different sizes. My 4th grader likes counting the faces, edges and vertexes and double-checking her work by applying Euler's Formula (F + V = E + 2).Dimensional products allow multidimensional exploration, fun and learning. Make geometry transparently fun by adding this product to your collection of learning materials.
