Should be owned by all educational stakeholders
This book should read by all educational stakeholders. It attempts to humanize our schools by reimagining classroom management through an equity and culturally-responsive lens. Sometimes our current practices are the reason students act out in ways that are harmful to the student, peers, and the classroom environment. Instead of trying to punish students in compliance, the authors suggest we examine our existing classroom practices and change them in ways that are student-centered and focus on the lived experiences of our students. At the heart of this book is a deep commitment to care and relationships in our schools. If our students don't feel valued, valuable, and affirmed, learning cannot happen and this opens the door to harmful behaviors.

Now I know better
This book offers a compelling argument for working to create a caring classroom environment, and it offers practical ways to support that work. Of particular importance is the focus on restorative discipline and how a restorative mindset can influence the attitudes and actions of teachers and students. The authors provide explicit suggestions for prompts and questions to address and defuse challenging situations.I will be using this book with my teacher candidates during their placements in urban schools.

A Must Read for Teachers and Parents
Dr. Rich Milner and his colleagues have really put together a wonderful piece of work that will add a great deal to the literature on classroom management. Very thoughtful, informative, and useful. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to be a teacher, is training to be a teacher, or is a teacher.

To unlearn what the education system has been telling us
I read this for a college course and it was great to learn from. I found it very helpful to spark reflection on my own experiences with education and give myself a base for classroom management in the future. I know I will be revisiting this resource time and time again.

Excellent instruction is good classroom management
I used this book with a group of teacher leaders to support our discussion of equitable discipline. Dr. Milner begins by providing the research and rationale for the book. The following chapters lay out a detailed plan on how to become critically reflective practitioners who consider our own bias and perspective when planning instructional experiences for our students. Dr. Milner provides a clear contrast between culturally responsive practices and the pedagogy of poverty, community vs. compliance and the need to understand, appreciate and include the communities our students live in into the classroom. This is an excellent book that drives self-reflective and sometimes difficult conversations. Dr. Milner successfully proves that good instruction will interrupt the cradle to prison pipeline.
