Very Simple and Cost Effective
A local company that specializes in replacing/fixing these things wanted $250 to do the job. I ordered this unit and despite the instructions saying it ONLY fit in certain models, it was a perfect fit for the generic, cheap unit "model 658" the builder used. Much quieter than the original. The only struggle was getting the grille back on. Had to use needle nose pliers to manipulate the springs. And a lot of swear words. Very satisfied.

DIRECT REPLACEMENT FOR NUTONE 696N RO2 Bathroom Exhaust Fan
Our 20 yr old bathroom quit working unexpectedly. Started looking for a replacement. This fan exhaust more CFM's than the old fan and it is also much more quite. Removal and install was a snap. All I needed was flat head screw driver and pair of pliers. Make sure you do your research and check for the manufacturer and model of the parts your are removing to match up them with replacement parts. Also check the housing box for the fan. This model only fits in a Model "D" box. The model "D" is box is what our fan was installed in.This a great plug and play replacement, took me about 15 -20 min to remove the old one, vacuum all the dust out and install this one. DONE! The only down side for me was the price, it seems about 2X $$$ than it should be. But everything is more expensive now.

Hope your builder installed the original right...
The fan upgrade itself is decent. It pulls more air than the builders grade original, and does fit. If the builder installed the box right. It's also so quiet I had to reprogram the smart switch I use to control it to tell me if the fan was on, as I can't hear it over the shower. Builder didn't properly secure the box/shell properly, that this does not replace (as I expected), so the upgrade took me a few extra minutes, and some extra explicatives. Our builder used the "not totally cheap, but still crappy" one, which had more like impeller fins, versus the boat screw style I expected, but the squirrel cage on this one is still a major upgrade.A note, as I kinda actually would have preferred the OG grill to this one (for air flow reasons only), Broan/NuTone changed the grill mount entirely between the "base" and this unit, as the grill mounts to the motor plate this unit comes with, not the housing box. Don't get me wrong, this grill looks much better, but personally, I'm a function over form guy, and the stock grill has a lot more ventilation area than this cover does.Box is also solid AF. I have seen computer components costing 10x+ what this FAN costs come in boxes that are more than 10x "cheaper" than this absolute unit of a shipping box. Like I'm pretty sure I could use the box as a jack stand for my ZTR (*I'm not going to, but...)

If you have a 695-R01, -R02, or -R03, (and a few others) this is the replacement you're looking for!
Swapping out my old fan, this cut the sound level from "a lot like a vacuum cleaner" to "ok, tolerable". it's not silent, but at least you can't hear the fan from three rooms away. this new fan is a drum-style and it's replacing the old propeller-style fan. that's pretty much the only difference, but it makes a big difference. in the attached photo, the new fan is the black one on the left and the old one is white and on the rightpro: really simple to install. pull off existing cover, pull out the plug in the old fan housing, insert a scrrewdriver into a little slot to pry off the old fan, clip in the new one, plug in, attch the new cover, and you're in business. much quieter business.con: there's a low-volume 60hz buzz from the fan motor. it exists in the older fan you're replacing but that fan is overall too noisy to hear it. with this quieter fan, it's noticible. plus, the sheet metal vent that the fan mounts to tends to amplify the buzz. i was able to quiet it to a reaonable level by bending the vent shroud away from any contact with the ceiling drywall.

Replacing fan
Very simple replacement of old fan. Exceeded my expectations for efficiency and low noise

Good, but odd design
I installed this in my bathroom. The bathroom has a relatively low ceiling (probably 7 ft). Although this was easy to install and a nice quiet improvement over my other NuTone fan (50cfm, 2.0 sones), the design of the grille leaves the cord for the motor visible along with the steel mountain plate. I ended up swapping the grille with a different Broan/NuTone grille I bought for my laundry room (fully louvered) since the ceiling is higher. Just something to consider.

Replaced Broan 771-a bathroom fans (4 sones) with these 2.5 sones units - considerably quieter!
Was sick and tired of the old 771-a fans we had in our bathrooms....4 sones is just too loud for such a small space and you can hear them down the corridor! Was not totally sure these would replace the 771-a fan units but thought I'd give it a try.The unit fits the same space and wiring layout as the 771-a's and was a simple swap out. Note the old fan covers would not work with the new units so had to use the newer looking covers (not a bad thing!)

Fast and Easy install, just like the older #690 upgrade kit it replaced
Over time, the fan motor shaft wears down and the fan begins to vibrate, becoming noisier until it eventually fails. When that happens, you can use this kit to swap out just the "bad" fan component and get back in action. To be clear, this is just the internal moving parts and does not include the "box" or ducting that is permanently installed in your ceiling. This QK60 is a newer version of the upgrade kit vs. the "original" Broan/ NuTone 690 Bathroom Exhaust Fan Upgrade Kit, which I've installed before (it is still available from some sellers). Installation for the kit remains super easy. The major revisions are: The fan mounting plate-frame is just one size (the old 690 kit included two plate-frame sizes), the QK60 Grille has a different appearance than the 690, and this QK60 is a quieter 2.5 sones vs the prior 3.0 Sones. Recommend you remove the existing grille and check inside your enclosure to verify compatibility: specifically, look at the silver plate-frame that the fan is mounted upon; if the power plug inserts into the corner of the plate-frame (diagonal), then you're good; if it instead inserts into the middle of one side (parallel), this QK60 won't fit your housing => get the old 690 kit with a choice of two frames.
