I bought this book as a Christmas gift for a friend. Being an avid movie lover, I leafed through it before gifting it, thinking I would get one later for myself. I may have missed something in the description, but I thought it would be essays by the directors, but it has an interview format. It's still interesting, just not quite what I expected

A great book. It's so great to hear directors I admire discuss the films that are so important to them. Provides fascinating insight into their creative process. Received as a gift, and very much appreciated!

Bought this as a gift for my teenage son who loves movies. He can't put it down and has started viewing many films discussed in this book which he had not yet seen. He's commented many times how much he loves the book!!

How many of these directors are women? Certainly not 50%, but I'll let you find out for yourself. So, the argument is a Catch-22-esque proposition: either there aren't enough female directors in Hollywood to manage a more respectable representation (really, you couldn't shoot for at least 25%?), OR the author/editor is testament to the still-prevalent, and sexist, idea that women can't direct, or at least not on the same level as men.

And I mean EVERY SINGLE ONE. This is an impossible book to read because every apostrophe is replaced with mistranslated symbols. Please give me a refund, or send me a hard copy.

Discovering what makes other directors tick, is a continual journey through the eyes of others. I did enjoy reading this, and tend to use it as a reference as well.
