Outstanding. Best BBC drama in years. No kidding. Just see it. Insightful.
So far, Brilliant. I've seen 5 episodes. You cannot tell it's suranne Jones whose acting in it. Incredible, has too win something for the role. Same for the cast, show, and writing. For me it's like, tom Jones , the film with Albert Finney Stars in. It's on BBC & HBO. Just give it a go, cheeky funny dramatic. And has a serious point about what people go through in life. Hope it has a happy ending. But that's just me.

NO BLU RAY AGAIN ??
The show is of course truly brilliant and I give it 5 STARS out of 5.First, although this was filmed and produced in the UK, the BBC eventually broadcast this in the UK four weeks after it had already premiered for US audiences on HBO (for contractual reasons with HBO no doubt). Then, when they finally get around to broadcasting it in the UK in HI DEFINITION on BBC1HD no less (it was filmed with HI DEF cameras) — they then offer it to consumers in STANDARD DEF ONLY — on frankly, what is outmoded dvd. This is just yet another cynical move by the BBC to get more money out of you — when and if — they finally decide to offer it as they could be doing now, and as they should be doing now — in a HI DEFINITION Blu ray set.Dvd first appeared back in 1999 with 'The Matrix', so it is 20 years old now and is realistically an obsolete format.Blu ray caught on in around 2006, and so is itself — 13 years old now. I realise that a lot of older people may still not own a Blu ray player — so yes of course still offer it for them on dvd.BUT TO ONLY OFFER IT ON DVD? on its first release? In 2019?The proof that the BBC's sell thru division is cynically attempting the exploit you and your money — is illustrated by the latest release of the classic Doctor Who serial 'The Macra Terror' a programme that was first broadcast way back in 1967 — and offered — surprise, surprise for the FIRST TIME ROUND ON DVD AND BLU RAY, because the BBC absolutely know that Doctor Who fans would simply never stand for it, and there would be uproar. But this is a MODERN SHOW, filmed in 2019 Halifax, in HI DEFINITION.So the idea that someone at the BBC would actually think that a Blu ray of thIs show would not sell?— is a complete nonsense. As long as people keep shelling out and giving them good sales for their 'first offer, first round' dvd's, then the BBC's sell thru division will keep playing this tactic over and over again with you, instead of the latest picture quality in a 1080p resolution on their first release — and I just think it's very poor of them not to be offering this.MESSAGE TO BBC — STOP SHORT CHANGING US: GIVE US THE BEST PICTURE QUALITY....

Brilliant, different, challenging and delightful
Gentleman Jack is one of the finest BBC television series of the decade. Suranne Jones and Sophie Rundle deliver stunning performances. Every single detail in Sally Wainwright's script is cleverly thought out and well-grounded in the harsh realities of life in 1830s Yorkshire for people at all levels of society. No punches are pulled. Anne Lister herself is a brave, dashing, fascinating human being whose time has come to be celebrated. Seriously, watch this.

One to get
I’m delighted the Suranne Jones / Sally Wainwright and the Maxine Peake / James Kent dramatisations of Anne Lister’s diaries are each unique and both brilliant. We seem to have gone from a bit of a famine since the five-star Portrait of a Marriage, to a relative feast. Three more stand-out series involving lesbian relationships (I’m including the super-smart, discomforting Killing Eve) in the last few years. Perhaps I shouldn’t feel quite so grateful, but I do.Apart from wonderful portrayals by Suranne Jones and Sophie Rundle, Gemma Whelan perfectly pitches her character as a strong - and often hilarious - foil to her dynamic, compelling older sister. (I’m not sure if Ms Whelan appeared in Gentleman Jack before Killing Eve, but she’s well and truly discovered now as a top talent.) Then Sophie Rundle’s Annie Walker finds her own sweet strength towards the end. Beautifully done.Let’s start thanking people. Thank you, Sally Wainwright and company. And I see that both Lister dramatisations, Killing Eve and Portrait if a Marriage are all BBC productions.. So thank you, BBC. I’ve just paid my licence fee, and although it’s a stretch for many of us in the poorer majority, I do feel happy (!) at contributing to the production of such first rate drama. If you’re looking for a tonic, and you’re a gay woman or you simply love love (either or both will do), then Gentleman Jack is one to get.

Oscar Winning Performances
If there were Oscars given for TV. the two leading ladies deserve them. I hope the BAFTA's acknowledge these bravura performances. Also the scriptwriting and the supporting cast. I doubt Suranne Jones will ever better this.

Fantastically written, brilliantly acted
This has to be the best thing iv watched on tv for a very very long time. Suranne Jones & Sophie Rundel deserve to win every award going for their portrayals of Anne & Ann. Its made me want to learn more about Anne Lister's life. I cannot recomend this show enough.

Fantastic little series
Normally I'm not a fan of period dramas, but this is fantastic I initially watched it because it is about Anne Lister and shibden park which is a local park to me, I thought it'd be a location spotting experience but no I really got in to the characters and the story with a insight into a alternative lifestyle in that era almost forgetting it was filmed here, well worth watching and indeed well worth a visit to shibden Hall
