This product performs better than the seller described. They recommended 1/3 to a whole bag to start a fire. My first test was with less than 1/8 of a bag. I used a round ferro stick for striking. I was able to strike the spark, and get a sustained hot burn for about 6 to 7 seconds. My second test involved the same amount of magnesium, and dried moss as tinder. This ignited on the first strike again, and was able to properly catch the moss, and generate embers for me to feed. The only drawback I found was that the magnesium dust gets into the small ziplock surfaces, so I recommend bringing a larger bag to hold the magnesium pouch in once opened. It was recommended to make contact with flame for at least five seconds if using a lighter. Honestly, if I have a working lighter for five seconds, I don't really need the magnesium. It struck fine with ONE SPARK from the ferro stick, reliably. No matches or lighter required. It also burned hot and bright, in the same way I am accustomed to magnesium burning, so it did not appear to be alloyed with anything. The tin arrived in great shape, and looks very useful for other purposes.

Proper care, just a little will do you, and proper fire starting technique, this will start a fire every time. Very light weight. Emptied one bag in a small plastic bottle to keep it secure and dry and easy to find and use. Good product.

At first I had issues with getting it to light, but that was operator error. Once I added more of the product to my pile it took flame after a few strikes. While watching it burn I saw all of the different colors which I thought was awesome. Great product to have thank you my friends.

I purchased this to use only in an emergency when I might not have dry tinder to start an enduring fire. It arrived undamaged and in six individual, transparent plastic bags. Instructions said to use about a third of a bag for a fire. So I put a couple into each of the fire starting kits of the two Emergency Get Home Bags for each my vehicles. They came in a sturdy tin reusable container for transport.

We bought a ferro rod and have been frustrated with it. This box of magnesium was just what we needed.Not just for the easy to catch fire magnesium but for the great instructions.Pulling the rod instead of moving the scraper...genius!
