Buy it for the pins, but forget about the tools.
The pins and keys included with this set are...OK. The pins aren't color-coded in any way, which is fine; they're bagged up in individual baggies identified by the standard Schlage pin-height numbering. Install them in the cylinder plug in the correct order, and the included keys work fine. If you're wondering how to identify the correct pin order, it's stamped on the bow of the included keys. Put a new key in the plug while you drop in the new pins, and you'll see the pins line up along the shear line just like they're supposed to.The tools, OTOH, are less than optimal. The flat bar can release the detent in the knob neck, but the C-clip remover end is not shaped well enough to actually push off the C-clip (mainly, it's just too thick to fit into the groove). The plastic follower is workable, but the notched end doesn't fit the egg-shaped molding on the back of common Schlage cylinders--so you'll have to do a little more work to keep it turned correctly, or your driver pins will pop out of place as you push out the plug. The Prime-Line E 2402 Re-Key A Lock Kit, Schlage Type "C", 5-Pin Tumbler Sets w/Pre-cut Keys is IMHO packaged with better tools, better instructions, and color-coded pins.

The included tools are useless.
The one star is because the pins and keys work well. The four stars I didn't add were because the tools were virtually useless and without those tools, the kit is virtually uselessMy apologies in advance if the nomenclature is incorrect. I am a very handy DIY'er not a locksmith. Lol!I installed new entry doors on the front and rear of a house. We wanted to key all the locks alike. To become familiar, I watched several YouTube videos on rekeying my brand of locks before attempting the project. I started by rekeying the double cylinder deadbolt. The follower was too thick to fit into the cylinder hole to push the key way:tumbler out. I had to sand the entire length of the follower with 200 grit sandpaper and then polish it smooth with 2500 grit. That narrowed it enough to enter and follow the tumbler/key way out of the cylinder. Pins were easy to install. Then onto the first knob lockset. The Pickle Fork / Flat tool included in the kit was also terrible! The c-clip removal end of the pickle fork was too thick to fit into the clip channel and the tabs that should have made contact with the clip couldn't because the sides were too short to reach the clip and the curve cutout on the tool was too shallow to allow the tool around the cylinder. I watched a couple YouTube videos on how to remove the clip without the tool and I was able to remove it with two small screwdrivers. Kins of reminiscent of playing the game "Operation" as a kid. :0The next step involved using the other end (the slotted end) of the follower to push the key way/tumbler out of the cylinder. Problem there was the tool had a flat channel cut in it and the locket has an oval shape. Clearly oval peg does not fit in flat hole. Lol!!!I saw the same issue written about in at least one other review (thanks Dana). In that review, the person mentioned drilling out the flat slot to make it oval. I used a grinding bit on my Dremel tool to do that. Once modified, it worked superbly. In closing, this was not generic rekey kit. It was specific for my brand and type of locks. The kit included two tools, each an epic failure. What should have been an hour long project to rekey 7 locks turned into a three out project needing awls, screwdrivers, a Dremel and grinding bits. I felt more like a wannabe dentist than a DIY locksmith.I would not recommend this product to a friend, family member, or even to someone I don't particularly like!Try one of the many other kits out there!

Exactly what's needed.
My neighbor asked if I could rekey her locks. She has 4 Schlage knobs and 3 deadbolts. 2 of the deadbolts are keyed inside and outside, so they have 2 cylinders each to rekey. So that's 7 locks to rekey, but 9 cylinders. This kit is for 8 cylinders, but there were extra pins included in the baggies, enough for one more cylinder. I suspect the company adds some extra pins just to make sure they don't short anyone and in case you drop and lose one. Either way, I had enough and considered myself lucky in that regard. The metal tool is partly useless, partly unnecessary. The tab end is for removing the door knob, but a flat screwdriver works better and is easier to handle. The forked end is for removing the c-clip from the back of the knob cylinder but is useless. (deadbolt cylinders are held in with a Phillips screw.) Be prepared to remove about a 1/2 inch c-clip without this tool. I did it with 2 small flat screwdrivers like a good hillbilly mechanic. The plastic dowel tool is of great value and should be cherished. It slides through the casing to push out the cylinder and keeps the other pins and springs in place while replace the pins in the cylinder. Then reinserting the cylinder pushes the tool back out. Works great. Note that the keys are stamped with a 5 digit number; this is the sequence of the pins for this key. I didn't realize that at the start, so I laid out the key and lined up the pins to figure out the sequence before starting. Overall, good stuff.

Works!
This kit works very well, I cannot tell the difference between these parts and genuine Schlage. Providing four keys and ten of each needed pin is a wonderful value for a homeowner who wants to rekey all locks alike, whereas Schlage only sells a huge pin assortment more suited to a locksmith. If you have good patience and manual dexterity, re-keying locks with this kit goes smoothly and easily. Just read those instructions carefully to avoid springs and followers flying everywhere. Schlage offers detailed instructions with illustrations on their website (search "rekeying guide"). I used these parts to re-key both deadbolts and handle sets with good results.
