Well made, but not very grippy.
It may be fixable with the right shoe, but riding the same flat bmx shoes I am used to, I found that the bump in the middle from the spindle reduced the contact with the pins all around and made them less grippy than the MG1s I planned on replacing. They are really well made, lightweight, and helped reduce pedal strikes, but I feel that they just don't have enough grip and I burn energy focusing on keeping my feet planted to the pedals. After five rides on them, four of the rides ended up with nice new bloody shin tattoos. I switched to a much more expensive pedal in a Canfield Brothers crampon, but it has an even lower profile and after 3 aggressive rides, I have had zero pedal slips.

The MG-5 looked like just the thing
I've been running Welgo MG-1s for a few years and was looking for a thinner pedal. The MG-5 looked like just the thing. I read all the reviews, so I knew to loktite all the pins in place. It only took a few rides in rocky NJ to lose my first pin. My MG-1s still have all the pins after 2 years. Looks like I'm switching back.Pros:Lighter than the MG-1Thinner than the MG-1Pins are more rounded so they don't scratch up your shins (this is also a con)Relatively inexpensive.Cons:Pins are not as grippy as my MG-1s, especially in the wet.The threads on the pins don't run deep enough. This allows the entire pin to get ripped out on rock strikes, ruining the threads. The spindle is up higher than the pedal which you can feel. I didn't mind so much, but it's worth mentioning. If these pedals had the pins from the MG-1 that run in from the back of the pedal they would be perfect.

Quite grippy, strong, thin, cheap - pins could be sharper
I rode the MG-1s for years and switched to the MG-5 now. They are very similar but the MG-5 are thinner giving you more ground clearance.I have used them on about a dozen longer rides so far and they work great. They are reasonably grippy in the dry, look good and have taken quite a few rock strikes without damage. Note that I'm using the for "trail biking", not for downhill. The only drawback with these is that the pins are not very sharp, and you may slip around a little in the wet, so if you are looking for the ultimate in wet grip, you should probably look elsewhere. I think that the pins are replaceable but I haven't tried that yet.

Just buy the wellgo mg-1 or some other more conventional pedal.
Cons:•the tunnel for the spindle is to high, it limits your grip.•the pins are way to smooth for proper grip.•hard riding or hard slams on pavement I believe would break them.Pros:•they are very light•sealed bearings•colors•the option of 6mm Allen wrench moundingI would recommend the mg-1 I ran those for a few yearsTheses mg-5's I installed went outside then immediately back in and took them off for return.

My feet no longer slip
The plastic pedals that came on my hybrid were a little too slippery in wet conditions. These pedals really grip my shoes. They appear well made, lightweight, and installed very easily.

Quality pedal
I bought these for winter riding on my Surly Wednesday fat bike. I selected them based on several other reviews that said they are lower profile than similar pedals. This has proven useful in rocky areas. So far I have used them on my fat bike, and on my mountain bike, they have worked well. I'm not going to replace my SPDs for most of my riding, but these are a good alternative in winter if you want to wear hiking boots with thick socks to stay warm.

PLEASE READ THIS FOR THE TRUTH OF THE PEDALS
I will start off by saying I have had these for almost a year now, and I have seriously given these pedals huge blows to boulders and other obsticales. Not only are they insanely lite weight, but the they are just so strong. I would believe they are stronger than carbon fiber by 4 times. Considering I do downhill mtb, and I'm constantly giving these pedals a brutal time I will conclude by saying I absolutely recommend these to anyone. If your a beginner or a pro, they will not let you down. The only trick to these pedals is that you have to find flat footed shoes in order to grip on tight. Vans and a few nikes are good but if you want the real experience I would try to find some downhill mtb platform pedal shoes. These also come with two really cool stickers wich I obviously had to stick on my bike.

Light and grippy, but strong enough for the big guys
I was anxious about going to platform pedals after having started mountain biking a year ago on clipless, but with Fiveten Freerider shoes and these pedals my feet feel just as secure on the pedals as before. These are light, grippy and they look great. For the price, you cannot find a better deal. Also, I'm 220lbs, and I feel confident in the strength of these pedals.
