Q: Does it actually have a full 4" X 4" of viewing space? If not, how much overlap is there? I need fairly precise measurements.

The inner portion of the frame is 3 9/16”.

Q: Could i fit a small shell inside? about how thick an object can you put into this shadowbox frame? thank you.

A small shell will probably fit, I cut a piece of felt for the background, glue a small rock that my 8 year old grandson gave me, it works fine. It looks to be about an inch & a half deep maybe a little more. Hopefully this helps you.
