The inside of the "hook", which is what you use to cut the bark and so is the most important part, was ground back and bent in so it was recessed from the sides. I will have to grind away the bent tip and shorten the sides to match the tip. This is poor quality control.

It's a little bit crude, but it was effective. And not too expensive. I am using it to girdle an Anna Apple tree that has never produced much fruit. The theory is if the tree itself is too vigorous in its growth it will produce Few apples. Not having a lot to lose, I girdled this six-year-old tree through the bark and cambium layer to the shiny glossy fibrous xylem layer. I am risking killing the tree but have decided to take the chance. The big problem is how deep to go, so with my wife looking over my shoulder I took the plunge. Very little info on this, but if you r going to try do it on some tree you don't value, or a branch on the problem tree rather than going around the trunk in a spiral. Once you start cutting, it seems obvious when you hit that Xylem layer. It is what you would associate with stripping the bark off a branch, a glossy greenish white slippery surface. Don't cut into that. Good luck...
