Earnshaw timepieces are modern day watchmakers, named in honour
of their eighteenth century inspiration, Thomas Earnshaw, have
created a new collection of watches to mark the first expedition
to circumnavigate the Australian shores. HMS Investigator, which
crossed the seas to the shores of Australia in 1801, was
considered the best vehicle for the voyage to the Antipodes.
Built as Xenophon, a bulk cargo ship, she was identified as the
perfect vessel for a long exploratory voyage as her commercial
role meant that she had good storage space for supplies, even
though she was in fairly bad repair. After undergoing a refit to
prepare her for the voyage, she was renamed the Investigator and
was deemed ready to set sail. For the most part the Investigator
sailed an uneventful voyage, and most remarkable were the two
boxed timekeepers or chronometers built by eighteenth century
watchmaker Thomas Earnshaw that were kept aboard the board. The
ship’s captain, Flinders, went to shore regularly to check the
settings of the chronometers against the stars. The Earnshaw
chronometer was the only one working at the end of the journey,
causing Flinders to refer to it in his book A Voyage to Terra
Australis as "this excellent timekeeper". To mark the
craftsmanship and excellence of Thomas Earnshaw’s chronometer
which was aboard the Investigator for this debut circumnavigation
of the Australian shores, modern day watch brand Thomas Earnshaw
has launched a stylish collection of men’s watches. Also known as
Investigator, this collection of watches pays a fitting tribute
to the hardy voyager. The Thomas Earnshaw Investigator watch is a
stylish piece based on the past history of the brand. The
ES-8001-04 has a solid stainless case, complimented by a smart
charcoal grey double layered dial and decorated with silver
numbers and indices. The hands are luminous and the second hand
has our famed double E. This timepiece is powered by a Japanese
chronograph quartz movement with a date window and is finished
off with a matching soft brown leather strap that comfortably
connects to your wrist by our unique E buckle. With a hardened
dome mineral lens, and water resistant up to 5ATM, the
Investigator is a hardy watch, like its namesake, and offers the
best in timekeeping for a for a man whose interests lie in
learning about the rich stories of adventure and exploration of
the past.

-----------------------
Thomas Earnshaw is revered as a legend and pioneer in the field
of Horology. Born in Manchester, England in 1749, he was
celebrated for his work in refining, and improving upon the
Marine Chronometers of the era.
It was those Marine Chronometers, crucial to the journeys taken
by the boats in the Royal Navy as they circled the globe during a
golden era in English history of science and exploration. None
more so than Chronometer no. 506, carried by HMS Beagle which
carried Charles Darwin on his journey around the world to inspire
his breakthrough study of evolution, "On the Origin of Species".
Lauded for his work with marine chronometers, Earnshaw also
embraced the challenge of developing clocks for use in
observatories such as those in Greenwich and Armagh and examples
of his exquisite work can be seen in museums and auction houses
around the world.
It is this pioneering spirit to further the science of horology,
coupled with a drive for excellence in craftsmanship that is at
the heart of the Earnshaw timepiece which is available for the
watch connoisseur and enthusiast alike.
This late great English watch maker has inspired us at Earnshaw
watches to recreate and design timepieces dedicated to the
history of the period and the life and times of Thomas Earnshaw
himself.
