An Overview of Qigong
This is the first book in Dr. Yang's Qigong series and it provides an overview of Qigong for health and martial arts. Like his other books, this one begins with the history of qigong, and the general principles of qigong. This one also deals with popular martial arts styles of qigong.Following the introduction, the book is divided in sections on Wai Dan Qigong (external cultivation), Nei Dan Qigong (internal cultivation), Qigong for Health, and Martial Arts Applications. The external cultivation includes illustrated Da Mo's Yi Jin Jing, Open Palm Sequence, Moving Forms, Ba Duan Jin (Eight Pieces of Brocade), and Still yoga-like stretching exercises. Some of these you may be able to do, at least as far as physical movement is involved, by just following the illustrations and descriptions, while for others you may be better off if you either watch them on a video or participate in a live instruction. The internal cultivation includes the Small Circulation (Microcosmic Orbit) , Grand Circulation, Qi Enhancement and Transport Training, and Chi Self-Massage after the exercises. While the information provided may serve as an overview, you may want to cross-reference it with other works, perhaps Mantak Chia's. In this book Dr. Yang is making it seem much harder to do than it truly is and you'll encounter all kinds of warnings if you do it improperly, and Mantak Chia teaches some preparatory exercises that make the circulation a breeze. Also for some reason, Dr. Yang's has misplaced Ming Men, the Door of Life, and keeps referring to it as if it were the point behind the heart, when in fact, Ming Men is the point between the kidneys. In the Health section, Dr. Yang shares an overview of qigong healing modalities like health diagnosis, acupuncture and massage, using taiji balls and six healing sounds - not enough to get you to do them yourself for a healing, but more to get an idea of modalities that you may want to explore further. In Martial Arts section the focus is mainly on cavity press or chin-na, which Dr. Yang's explains in much greater detail in his related books and an excellent video. While this book may not be perfect on its own, I still do recommend it for the avalanche of good information. Just do cross-reference it with other related books and videos. I do recommend just about all books and videos by Dr. Yang Jwing Ming, as well as most of those by Mantak Chia. Dr. Yang's work though seems to gravitate toward martial arts, and Mantak Chia's toward taoist spiritual alchemy, but many basic practices overlap and they wonderfully complement each other. There are other good others, but these two seem to be among the most prolific authors.

Review of Qigong for Health and Martial Arts
This is a good book that shows and explains the muscle change classic exercises, 8 pieces of brocade, Grand Circulation and massage techniques, as well as more. Waidan ( external energy ) and neidan ( internal energy ) methods are explained and shown. This is a really good book to start with. Basic, yet not too basic.

Always impressive
Ymaa books are always well detailed and have lots of great info. These Wai Dan Qi Qgong sets in here are very powerful for the practitioner that knows what they are doing.

qigong for health and martial arts exercises and meditations
well photographed with well thought out diagrams and movements....however the author has a complicated way of explaining everything in proper order....twice i dove right in excited to read this book.(even trying to take notes)...twice i got confused trying to follow it in some what of an order...all in all if you have some previouse expieriance with this topic...it is well worth purchasing the book for the clean photos and lines explaining each position

Thank Goodness for QiGong
This book was my intro into QiGong and after 10 years I can see how the standing form has helped me become the successful person I am today.I know this is going to sound a bit silly but, who needs viagra if youve got QiGong. Every time i see a commercial on TV or hear one on the radio Im thinking what a waste of money. The Da Mo style has provided for me. ;^)Its also is great for weight lifting and working out or just getting out of bed in the morning. And it works wonders for evening out your temper, assuming you have one.Sorry to be so basic about it but Ive gotta give credit where credits due. Thanks qigong, thank you all things and thank you Dr. jwing Ming.

Useful introduction to Quigong, if a bit erratic.
This book is not going to be the only Quigong book in your library. However, it is a useful one.Simply, it's an introduction to Quigong in various forms, from exercises to medicine to martial arts. It's not the most consistent book, and there are times where one may wish for more detail or less. However, there's also enough good material on breathing, exercises, history, and what to expect when you get deeper into Quigong that it's worth the price. If you're an experienced practicioner, it's probably not worth your time, though it may be good for helping others start out.

Like it a lot
It gives a lot of written explanations with plenty of pictures of poses to aid the learner. A couple of chapters on the history of it is interesting as well. The meditation training is useful as well, explaining the reasons as to why and how Qi can be cultivated with proper breathing during meditation. The only thing I would change is to make it spiral bound so it is easier to look at while practicing poses.

An excellent straight forward explanation of what are the backbone of ...
An excellent straight forward explanation of what are the backbone of many traditional martial arts, meditation and chi exorcises for changing your tendons and muscles with an explanation of small and grand circulation(microcosmic/macrocosmic. orbit). Coupled with Dr. Yang's the root of Chinese qi gong you will be able to grasp the basics of Da Mo's meditation system.
