My kid loves these socks and they almost never get holes (except when he wore them on concrete).

These are soft and warm, but one of the pairs got a hole in the upper ankle after just two wears. I don't know if this happened in the wash machine, or what, but I've never had any other socks do this. My 4 yr old doesn't mind, though. We live in Michigan, and my son hasn't complained about cold feet.
